Post Improving MPG?

To all you folks out there who take the time to tinker and tune your engines and then post your comments on this board. Thank You! I have obtained some valuable information from this site. What can I do to get more MPG out of my 2001, SuperCrew, 5.4 4X4? Will a FIPK help? Will an FIPK + something else help more? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

The fipk will help and an aftermarket exhaust will do even more. You will probably get around two to possibly three mpg improvements. The best thing to do is to drive with some common sense and civility.

Just keep in mind your expense ratio.
A truck that now gets 15 mpg driven 12000 miles will use 800 gallons of gas. At $1.50 a gallon that's $1200.
If you now get 17 mpg you will spend $1060.
How much are you willing to spend to save $140? Figure your own estimates first.

Cool

Something that I've found helps fuel mileage is to use the panel/vent setting for the climate control. This keeps the a/c condenser from running. It will run if you use any of the defrost settings, and of course when the a/c is in use. I gained 1-2mpg just by doing this instead of running around with the defrost on for heat. This ones a cheapy, too.

Another way that has been discussed is replacing the stock belt driven cooling fan with electric fan(s). This reduces parasitic losses from the fan turning all the time, even when you're not needing it. This, though is another $200 fix for 1 or 2 mpg, but as with the exhaust and intake mods, you get the performance gains as well.

All the mods i have put on my truck have helped my mpg alot.(17 mpg) Adding induction, exhaust, throttle-body spacer, and chip will help you out. My brother's 99 4.6(3.55 gears/auto) is getting 17 mpg mixed driving. The only mods: K&N air filter and Helix Power Tower. His next upgrade is a Borla Exhaust.

I average mid 15's now.I drive about 1500-2000 miles a week. I set my cruise on 72 and let her go. I use low octane gas.I installed a bedlid for security of items in back. This helped me gain .5mpg.I lowered rear 2 inches
this seemed to help but minimal. My mileage went up at 5000 miles. Can't explain why as my driving habits are the same as before.

My best has been a little over 16mpg, and that was earlier this winter. I'll be interested what I can do when the "summer blend" gas is back in circulation around here. I know I took about a 2mpg hit when they went to the winter blend. Since then I've added the cover, and it seems to help some. I'm at about 13,000 miles, now. I've heard people say that gas mileage will improve all the way into the high teens with the triton engines.

I'm content with performance and economy for now. I may look into an electric fan setup and chip later on though.

I really do not know why so many people get bad gas mileage with their trucks.. I am quite happy with mine. I recently drove to Tofino on Vancouver Island,BC Canada and I filled up before going over the mountain and then I came back to the exact gas station (250km / 155 miles) I refilled and it was 30 liters to top it off (6.6 gal) which means I attained 23.6 miles per gallon with my 5.4 liter 2000 4wd S/cab XLT. For such a large engine and 4400 lbs and 10,000km (6000miles) on it I don't expect more. The road I drove on is far from flat...up/down all the way (no stop signs though)
In the city it is less..but it is a hwy truck.

i'm always amazed by all of the gas mileage talk . . . the window sticker estimates should have been fair warning . . . these are big trucks with lots of mass . .that takes fuel . . . one message made a lot of sense, why spend big bucks on mods that will never return investment in gas mileage unless it is the power you are after . . and if you use that power, the mileage will never come . . . the best bet is to drive sensibly . .accelerate modestly and, above all, anticipate traffic and lights to keep from stopping . . you want to maintain your momentum . . i'm getting 17 mpg in daily suburban traffic in fairly cold weather (30 degrees) with my V-6 5spd 4x4 . . but i baby it . . another driving style could easily run this down to 12 mpg . . .

Believe it or not, the first time I checked my mpg was last night. Filled up and did the math; 17.6 mpg. That's around town and East Tennessee 2 lane mountain curves. Not bad and should get better since my truck only has 5,700 miles on it.

Jimwww,

You better check your liters to gallons conversion again. 30 liters does not come to 6.6 gallons it comes to 7.8 gallons. Multiply the number of liters by .26 . So your mileage was 19.8 not 23.6.
