How many gallons of antifreeze do I need to buy for a flush and fill? Don't want to buy more than I need.

To answer correctly it is very important to know the year and engine you have.

For 97 and 98, 2wd and 4wd 4.6 and 5.4 without a/c the cooling system needs 17.9 quarts and with a/c 19.4 quarts.

Different if it is an Expy or Navi.

I am buying today the antifreeze for a flush tomorrow. I suggest you to get a repair manual. They have all the information you need and how to do it correctly. I have the Haynes manual and it's been like a school for me.

Sorry, I forgot to give you that pertinant info. I have the '97 4.6 with a/c. I do have a manual and I knew the 19.4 quart figure. What I don't know is:

does all the antifreeze drain out?

Lord help us, quarter of a gallon. For quarts to a gallon. four goes into 20 five times. Divide 20 in half. This is how much antifreeze you should put in your radiator. The other half should be distilled water.
