5.4l swap or just fix the 4.6l

Hey guys I have a 1997 f150 5 speed 4.6l. The head gaskets are out of it and was thinking about doing a 5.4l swap would that be a waste of my money and time or not. I Just drive the truck to school and don't have the 800 dollars and the knowledge to mess with the over head cams to change the head gaskets. I would love to have the extra horses, but if not reasonable then I am fine staying with the 4.6l.

Thanks in advances

I have been on that forum and read and I have all the notes just trying to figure out what you guys think is a better idea. The 4.6l has 166666 on it and the heads gaskets went out because of the heads not being resurfaced by the owner before me. So just seeing what you guys thought.

If you don't have the 800 bucks to fix the 4.6 and don't have the ability to do a head job, how are you going to get a decent 5.4 and install it?

My thoughts also. Purchasing a good 5.4 and having it installed would be much more expensive than the head job on the 4.6, in my opinion anyway.

My plan for getting a 5.4l was to go to a pick and pull with a few friend and just put a low mile motor. You would be able to get it cheaper, but have to do some work yourself. I also have a friend that just swap a 5.4l and he would my guess is he would help. I also am able to take it to my bosses house sometime and he would help me with the head job. But i was think for the money I spend on the heads on a npi 4.6l I won't gain anything other than a running truck, or I could find a pi 5.4l and still have a running truck with a little more hp.

The 5 speed manual transmission was not an option with a 5.4 engine as far as I know because it isn't strong enough. Fix the 4.6.
