2004 f150 lariat 4x4 5.4 motor build

So i have a 2004 f150 4x4 lariat 5.4 that has just under 100k on it. Still runs hard and strong. But i was thinking of throwing some money in to the motor and trans and wanted to know what you guys thought, as some may have allready done such.

I want to say i have around a $3000 budget give or take on the motor alone,my stock motor is rated at i believe 300 hp and 365 lb ft. I want to achieve 400+ hp.i dont plan on using a supercharger.

Which would be the better way. Ditch the motor i have and start with a crate? Are any of the parts worth useing? Can i build on mine?

I want to keep this my daily driver, but still want to have plenty of power yet be ultra realiable.
Live is so cal so have to keep is smogable

is any of this possible?

I'm pretty sure the only way to reach 400 hp with your engine is forced induction.

You aren't going to get 400 hp and pass smog.
