05 5.4 shortblock w 20K knocking
2 years ago I had an injector fail open, bend a rod, and Ford put in a shortblock. I had em replace 5 other injectors, cam phasers, and plugs too. A few months later it had a subtle rattle on startup. Took it to em and they said it was the air cleaner being loose.
Gas prices got high n I drove an economy car most of the time. Got it back to em recently and they tell me it's throwing a low oil pressure code in the head. 20K on their build (but past their 12 month/12K warranty) They're telling me to **** off.
Can phasers or VCT solenoids cause that kind of noise/code? If I unplug the VFD will that help to diagnose if they are gummed up?
I'm some new breed of pissed but it looks like it's going to be my problem.
Thanks for any help,
Swiftyp

Can you obtain & post the exact code(s)? They *should* have noted the code on the work order / OASIS.
Oil pressure losses:
-failed timing chain tensioners (the seals blow out)
-plugged VCT solenoid screens
-plugged VCT solenoid valve body passages
-plugged oil pump pickup screen
Since the VCT/ valvetrain is oil-pressure driven, any of those can induce that noise.
What oil & filter is being used?
FWIW - I think it would have been prudent to replace all eight injectors.
Good luck.

You really do need that code. If it's still doing it and you can safely drive it, go to Autozone , etc to pull it/them fer free.
One of these? Or something else?
P0520 Engine Oil Pressure Sensor/Switch Circuit Malfunction
P0521 Engine Oil Pressure Sensor/Switch Circuit Range/Performance
P0522 Engine Oil Pressure Sensor/Switch Circuit Low Input
P0523 Engine Oil Pressure Sensor/Switch Circuit High Input

P0349 and P0345.
Both cam position sensor.
9 is intermittent signal from sensor A bank 2
5 is lost signal from the same.
I found the sensor wire off the sensor, unhooked the battery, rehooked and started the truck. No check engine light but still has the noise.
I'm gonna pull the VCT and inspect/replace it n see what I get.

Well - that's a far cry from the 'low oil pressure' codes they claim to have found, lol. Not sure I'd trust that shop...
VCT operation can be observed (live data) with an advanced scanner, as there are PID's for same. That's one non-invasive method to check to see if the VCT system is responding normally. Otherwise the valve covers and front cover needs to come off. I;s also the only way to get to the VCT solenoid valve bodies themselves.
Did you try unplugging both solenoids to see if the noise stops?
FWIW - some additional info in this thread - including updated VCT solenoid and seal part #'s:

good luck
