I couldn't resist-
I thought your truck was "Bad ***". Are you worried about spanking a shivvie V-6?

Dan, I drive a 97 chevy everyday at work, it has the 4.3. I have absolutely no doubt that if I put it against my F-150 my truck would beat it easily. Remember, these are trucks, and not race cars.

dantheman123,
There is only one way to find out. Race him. As long as her truck is also a fullsize you should make out ok.

I have a V-6, too. Better have a chip in yours.
I remember playing with a loser chevy work truck in the mountains west of Roswell. Both V-6s, and I could barely catch him up hills (but I did!)
After the chip, no doubt you'll have more low end torque. The Ford transmission is what makes the truck slow, though. Darn them. Chevy has a better tranmission that lets the truck use the whole rev limit (and their engines are designed to crank out torque all the way through--my ex-fiancess Blazer surprised me with its quickness.)
You'll have a hard time beating a chevy V-6 with your truck, and that's mainly because of the differences in the way the trannys work. Your Ford has more power and torque.

Unfortunately, the Chevy will probably spank you. Ford is renowned for making lethargic V6's. The current Cougar, the V6 Mustang, etc. (Actually, the 2000 V6 Mustang is a little better). The fact that your peak horsepower and torque figures may be higher than the chevy's don't mean too much. You have to take into account area under the power and torque curves, as well as traction, driver ability, drivetrain power loss, etc. Chances are good you wouldn't win that race, but hey, grab a helmet, take it to the track, and find out.

One thing to keep in mind when going up against the 4.3, It is a 5.7L with 2 less cylinders, same bore, stroke, bore centers, etc.
Just like taking 2 cylinders off a 351 and reconfiguring the firing order, good torge for a little engine.
They are a very common engine these days on the mini-truck racing circuits. don't take 'em lightly.

I don't know the gear ratios, but at work we had fords chevies and dodges, all with the v6. The ford was easily the fastest. the pre 97 fords had the 300 6cly. it was slower but you could definately tell that it would outpull everything else. You will win if you race him assuming you know how to drive, and the gear ratios are pretty close.

HOTRATZ,
I'LL take the bet. That 4.2l is better all around and revs to the moon. 4.3 is a dog unless you have one of those little blazers then you probably have some competition for the 4.2.
