5.4L 3v, Interesting rattle sound, video inside.

I heard this rattle type sound backing my truck up my driveway the other day so I recorded it. I haven't a clue what it could be. I don't like how it sounds though so that is why I want to ask. My phasers are peacefully quiet, engine is stock other than Volant CAI and custom tune. 123k on original plugs ( don't hash me, going to be changed ). I have a low grade misfire in 4th gear O/D, goes away once I de-activate O/D so the RPMs rise, or make it downshift. From my studies that is due to the plugs dieing out. But with this sound, could I be having a transmission issue instead? My fluid is fine and red still, doe not smell burnt.

The sound is heard after the RPMs drop, it rattles out with the rev down. Can't say for sure I have ever heard it in drive, but it echos off my house wall in reverse.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Possibly loose or rattling exhaust heat shield. It could even be a small rock caught in the heat shield. Use a big hard rubber mallet and beat on the exhaust (while it is cool) in different places and you may find it. Could be something else, but that is where I would start.

hrmm. does it do it in park with revs? Sounded like exhaust leak but the last few seconds of the video sure sounded like marbles in a can...

The typical sound description of a bad lash adjuster is a marble in a can. Could be part of the missfire as well.

DarrenWS6 - did you ever figure out what that noise was? Mine has been doing it for a while (2010 Screw). Does in reverse, especially if it's going up a hill. Also when brake torquing.

Possibly a Cat going bad? They used to rattle on the Police Crown Vics like crazy when they go bad.
