Exclamation 2006 5.4L 3v problems

I am working on a 2006 F-150 wtih 5.4L 3v engine for a customer. I rebuilt the transmission for him, which is working great now. I drove the truck for 2 days after the rebuild to make sure everything was working. It sat for 2 days, then I started it to move it this morning. After starting the engine made a very loud clatter noise, started running rough, started stalling and finally died, cranks by no start. code p0301 is stored for cylinder #1 misfire. It sounds very much like it jumped time.

would cam phazers cause this? if so, how do I test them?

http://www.f150forum.com/f4/please-r...hlight=phasers

... and many, many more - on both sites .... Sorry - on vacamacation - I'm not searching anymore.

Consensus:

-IDS / advanced diag tools required to 'exercise' the VCT system to drill down to the root cause/failing components. These tools allow manual commanding of the VCT system. There are several PIDS defined for the various system components. This is designed to facilitate either confirming or refuting the VCT/timing system as being the cause of the concern to begin with.

IF it turns out to be the most likely candidate:

- Use Motorcraft components.
- NEVER use Dorman.
- Replace VCT solenoids with the latest revision. These: http://www.f150forum.com/f4/vct-sole...6/#post3013236
- Do not just replace the phasers - - opportunists ( the smart folks) will also R&R the tensioners (notorious fer leaking gaskets and bleeding out), chains & guides.

Other suspects - bad injector (leaking), bad cam follower, failed plug. Thing is one failed cylinder usually won't prevent the engine from at least running ( but like crap). Out there = FPDM. Out there #2 = dropped valve. Borescope anyone?

good luck

MGD

I pulled the passenger side valve cover today

I think I found the problem....

#1 cylinder dropped the front intake valve, broke the lifter and rocker arm

#3 cylinder rear intake valve broke the rocker arm, the other half of the roller is missing

I fished around in a few of the puddles oil in head looking for parts, the magnet came back fury

Owner:
"Lift and peel"... directions unclear, do I add this part to my engine too?

True story:
My friend got a case of oil for Christmas from his Aunt. Did an oil change the next day and topped off the oil in his b210 Datsun to the tune of about 10qt. Drove it about 2 to 3 miles SMOKING like a chimney the entire way.

It was decided to fix the truck with a reman head and new timing components. The owner of the truck came up with some money and I got most of the parts last week.

I installed a reman right head, new VCT solenoids, new timing chains and tensioners and right cam phaser.

I got the timing cover on today but don't remember where the top bolts go. I think the ones with threaded studs and nuts go on the left side for the power steering bracket.

Engine has been back together for over a week now. when I first got it running, it I thought I had mis-timed the cams, because it ran really rough. After some guidance from a several Ford Master techs, I finally figured out the # 5 spark plug was not firing. New spark plug installed and it runs much better now.
