Took it to a Ford mechanic. He is suggesting that my cam phasers and chain tensioners are done. Out of the blue. $1800

Remind me again why we like Fords?

So now I'm gonna source parts and take this mess on.

OK so $900 later I have it back to normal. Tensioner was broken and Phasers were shot. CLEAN internally. Meaning, no sign of oil passage issues. The only aspects of this failure that I saw affecting the oiling system, is that when the tensioner finally broke, little bits of plastic get shoved around the oil system. Enough so that I found little pieces on the oil pick up screen. I could perceive finer pieces getting picked up, but that is what I'd expect an oil filter to stop.

Aside from this abnormality, my engine was internally clean, and there was no build-up in any form of the oiling system.

This is plain and simple, an unacceptable failure. However it failed the first time, can completely happen again, without any real way to stop it. The plastic tensioner is IMHO the start of the problem. It doesn't take much normal V-8 stress to whack that flimsy plastic frame enough that it fractures. Once it fractures, it will crack and eventually completely break.
