Ask ten people and you'll get ten answers. For me, it's bang for the buck. I start with the exhaust because you also get that awesome Ford V8 sound. A lot of options based on your taste. I prefer Magnaflow overall for the sound, flow, and they're the least likely to cause droaning. You can do a full cat-back, or go cheap and just install a muffler with a 45° down pipe (aka "dumped"). Though a dumped exhaust will have a lot more noise inside the cab and a bassier sound.

Next thing is a cold air intake. Again there are a lot of options. But they key thing to stick with is one that uses a composite intake tube rather than metal. Metal soaks up engine heat and warms up the incoming air, which is counter-productive. This will also add more sound, so keep that in mind when choosing an exhaust if you plan to go this route.

That's the foundation as far as I'm concerned. A BBK throttle body without these mods done won't see much benefit.

A cat back won't net you anything besides noise, get a single 3" exhaust(from y-pipe back) or dual 2.25 mandrel bent X'd exhaust, you get some performance and I'm talking little like 10 horse at 4,000+ rpms.

Intakes are the worst bang for your buck. They bring in hot air which is worse for your engine. They also only net maybe 7 horse AFTER a custom tune atty 4,000+ rpms.. Look into the gotts intake mod. Us cheap and you get the same gains as those expensive intakes..

Bigger throttle bodies are also a big waste unless you decide to go FI.

Also Borlas drone less than magnaflow

No K&N intake.
They suck in warm air from engine bay. Which is worse.. Just do the gotts mod.

Going 302 would be a down grade, and pretty hard to do. If you want big power do a full lightning motor swap.
Or swap in a N/A 5.4 which us a pretty straight forward swap.

03 with the revised heads would be best. But 99-03 are all pretty good.

You can use your stock Trans, but you need to swap the torque converter.
Man you are set up nice for a lightning swap with a T-56 manual Trans (,i think that's it) from a cobra. That would be sweet.

Once you have the 5.4 you only need to find the supercharger and parts to swap on it.
I have no idea what a good year is from the cobra. Go onto the lightningrodder site.
For now just swap the torque converter and use your stock trans.
