'95 F150 5.8 EFI overheat damage?
My 1995 F150 with 5.8 EFI started overheating about a year ago. The best I can determine is when I flushed it a few years ago the tap water (which is actually well water) was loaded with iron, which clogged the thermostat. When it overheated, and when I flushed the system with cleaner it dumped a lot of red water. For the little bit it ran before we got it home, the engine started sounding awful.
I flushed the cooling system with radiator cleaner, refilled it, and started it running to let the cleaner circulate (per the instructions). Everything sounded fine except for a steady clacking noise. It sounded like it was coming from the right side of the block. I could hear it 20 yards away over the sound of the engine. I suspect the engine took some damage.
Any idea what could be making that sound? It gets faster when the RPMs go up but doesn't get any worse or better otherwise. The engine doesn't seem to be making any other problem sounds.
