We have a '96 Yukon with the 5.7 Vortec, 3.42 gears, and it is a powerhouse. Very fast. I test drove a F150 with the 260 5.4 and it felt about the same. I also drove a '97 3/4 ton Chevy van with the Vortec 5.7 and 3.73 gears. It was pretty sluggish with the extra weight and a gas hog. I think the 5.4 and the 5.7 are pretty evenly matched.

I hear GM's new diesel--coming soon--will put the beloved PowerStroke to shame. Outruns a 454 for the first some-odd feet.

Sweet99Chevy,

Sorry, but all the guys I know have the supercab, like Mumblys truck that you have seen pics of. Come to think of it, everybody I know that has a F150 has a supercab, well Lightnings don't count.

Tenderpaw and a few others pointed out that the vortec 5.7 has a lot of low end torque(where it should be). My wifes 99 Tahoe actually keeps up with me (sorta) in first gear.(LT package, 4door, 3.42's) We were just joking around one day going to the same destination for some unknown reason and I told her to hit it from a stop sign. Boy was I surprised. I was reeling. It really does have a lot of low end torque. My friends S/C 5.4l feels about the same just riding in it, but I haven't driven it. My .02.

The 3:42 axle ratio sucks in a Suburban such as my dad's 96. I know this because I drove it 5 hours today over the flint hills in central Kansas to my family's for thanksgiving. My dads 1/2ton (373)pickup does not shift like the sub does. Its a pulling machine. It pulls our 16' car hauler like a breeze up and down those hills.

Cool

I don't have any times but last week I happened to race a friend of mine in a '98 2WD GMC S/C with 3.73's. Up until we stopped, around 80, he had me beat by a little more than a truck length. Although I still gave him **** b/c I'm driving a 4x4 S/C that hasn't even been broken in yet.

Guys,I don't know what else to say. I just know when I driven my parents half-ton suburan with the 350 motor it does much better than my truck(2000 F-150 4x4,5.4 3.55 gears)Get better gas mileage too. The trailer I tow is a flatbed trailer about 8x12
usually three dirtbikes and a quad. Not a heavy trailer either.

Tom,

My '99 5.4L was rather lackluster when compared to my '97 4.6L and missed a bit at idle. It also sucked gas like nobody's business.

Then I read the thread: FYI: 5.4L F-150 Owners...
(follow the link below) https://www.f150online.com/f150board...ML/000676.html

Did the fix and the truck now performs better than when it was new 10 months ago and I gained almost 2 mpg.

Give it a shot. You got nothing to lose.

I find it hard to believe a Suburban (Tank) with a 255 HP 5.7 can outpull and out accelerate a much lighter F150 with a 260 HP engine. My sister and brother-in-law own a 97 Suburban and tow a horse trailer with it. My 5.4 F150 runs circles around it
