Exclamation 4.6 Triton vs. 4.8 Vortech vs. 4.7 I-tech

Ive heard debates between the bigger engines { the 5.4 and the 5.3} but havent heard much between the small guys. What does everybody think about these engines. Which one is better. What is stronger? Compare the 'old 4.6 with 220hp and the hopefully 'new' 4.6 with 240hp and about 300lb-ft torque I believe, with the other two, 4.8 and 4.7 liter.

The Triton 4.6 is the worker of the three, it has low end grunt, the kind that I need and it is extremely smooth. The 4.8 is a pushrod joke, old school indeed, it is far better than the old Chevy small block and I can't say if I were given one I wouldn't take it. I do wonder what the numbers are at the same RPM that the Triton is strongest, who needs all of the torque at 4.000+ RPM's??
Toyota has always had good engines, four bangers that is and I am sure that they put a lot of engineering effort in to the i-force since it is based on the Lexus 400 engine. However, Toyota only offers the one size V-8 and does not have much full-size truck experience except for the T-100 nightmare. Their engine is about the same vintage as the Triton engines and only slightly better a very few areas. A "Glam" engine for a "Glam" truck. The only reason the Tundra is faster than the others is because of the 4.10 axle they put in the test truck. Not because of the engine. It is the perfect full-size truck for those that don't need a full-size truck. The Triton 4.6 does everything I need it to do and does it well. It is a great engine especailly for it's displacement. I would welcome the extra HP though.

Yeah, I saw that they did the tests with the Tundra against a Ford with the 4.6 for like towing and whatever, and used the smaller 4.6 instead of the closer Horsepower matched engine, the 5.4 liter. Ooooo, lets all bow to the I-tech, not! Our tritons and some V6's will choke an I-tech's neck!

Cool

Wait a second! I heard that the Toyota Tundra V8 is called the I-tech. Then I heard I-Force. Well, whatever, we humans make mistakes, right?

Fordforce,

I am not sure what you said. I am not sure if you said anything at all or just gracing us all with your presence.

Go drive a few trucks and come back.

Gee, I wonder what the Triton 4.6 would be with two more camshafts???

>>>>That is what the motor in the SVT COBRA has, DOHC. It cranks out somewhere around 320hp. I'm sure there are a few other internal differences as well. Hoping to buy one for the "wife" this fall when the 2000 models come out. I think it will look nice sitting beside my F150.

2000 CHevy 4.8L gets 270hp and the shift point will be moved up from 5200 to 5600rpm's, hey thats more than the 4.6L in Mustang, looks like ford is in trouble, oh and 5.3L gets 285hp and 325tq, 6.0L gets 325hp, the new deisel gets 300hp and 520tq and the new 8.1L gets 340hp. I have to admit that chevy engines have the advantage for the new mellinium.

What kind of durability do you expect when you're turning 5600 rpm just to get out of the driveway?

Honestly, until GM can solve some of their problems with drivetrain loss- which may?? have happened with the new "tow/haul" tranny- they'll need significantly more power to keep up with Ford. Remember, if it's not on the pavement, it's not doing any good.

Yeah, I saw a dyno sheet on a 1999 Chevy Silverado Z71 with the 5.3 and it only put out 187 at the rear wheel. While a 1999 Ford F150 4x4 with the 5.4 put out 209.3 at the rear wheel. Like nomo said, if it's not on the pavement, it's not doing any good.

I laugh when people compare just peak horsepower.... Compareing hp and torque curves or average hp and torque are better methods...

My 2 cents: Ford has always had one-up-manship on the engines line. I haven't ever driven a 4.8L, but from what I have heard the engine is better than the old 305. As far as the numbers game, (1999's) show more torque than the 4.6L. I think that almost anything can beat the 305. I think that the 4.7L is built comparably to the 4.6L, so I would think that Ford's main competition in that measure is the Toyota engine. Anyone else?
