I say can them all. There is no replacement for displacement. I believe that Ford is now headed in the right direction with changing the 4.6L to 4.9L in the future as well as boosting power on the other engines. Also the V6 Diesel is a step int the right direction also. Low end power is what is needed for most trucks. max torque should be below 3000 rpm. And if people want to make fast trucks, offer SVT parts to hop them up.

4.6l is a great truck engine, but needs about 20 more horsepower. Mine runs great right now. Do what they did to the 5.4 to the 4.6, and they'll be set.

BTW,

I rode in a 90' Chevy Corvette with an LT1, and that sucker is a rocket!

Cool

fast46triton put that SuperChip in and you wont be disappointed no more. It will give you that 20 hp you are looking for and a much better shift from the auto trans.

K&N doesnt add the same torque, but close horsepower. And Cloaker is right, it comes with a rev and speed de-limiter.

basshunter: Yes you could get the same results, but you could get the increase from both mods. Let's say a muffler, K&N and opened intake get you 20 HP more. Let's also say a Superchip gets you 20 HP more. So, yes, it's true that doing the exhaust and intake gets you same gain as a Superchip. But then if you also install a Superchip, you get an *additional* 20 HP. I'm just making up the numbers, but do you get idea?

Thumbs up

My sister's boyfriend just got a Ext. cab V8 Tundra last week. We raced off a few stop lights last night and every time I would jump him about a 1/2 length but he would gain it right back and beat me by about a 1/2 length at 100 km/h and then we remained dead locked till about 130 or so.
I'm actually kinda disapointed in the Tundra as I figure it should have taken me by a bigger margin, especially when it comes w/3.92 or so gears! The Tundra that I test drove a while back sure did feel fast though.

I guess I should have stated that it isn't the HP that interests me as far as a truck is concerned. I want that thing that no truck has enough of...torque. Does the superchip deliver on torque, and is it enough to justify the money? I have the Gibson, K&N w/mod on my 4.6, and I will be putting the TransGo in within the next 2 weeks. I am wondering what the chip would do with the shift kit installed??? Thanks for the input.

Well, the superchip adds over 40ft-lbs of torque to the tritons and over 30 for the V6.

Cool

basshunter the Superchip does deliver on the torque as well as the HP. I started with a K&N filter too and debated my next mod, exhaust or chip. I got the chip and I must say it was very impressive. Today I rounded everything off with a 3" single cat-back swept side exhaust. It enhanced the other two mods nicely, but the chip was the icing on the cake in my mind. I was runnng the K&N on 89 octane prior to the chip so the move to 93 octane was not that costly any way and I gained in MPG by 1 - 1.5. Remember to disconnect the batery for 30 - 40 min after each mod so the computer will take full advantage of your investment.

BigRed2,
I don't quite understand why everyone is pushing the Superchip?! In my opinion, you get the same results by spending $40 on a K&N and $100 on a TransGo shift kit. Not to mention, you can still run 87 octane. Any thoughts?

Torque is also useful for towing. It probably adds more to your tow rating, but the engine can tow more, but the suspension, body, etc... cant handle much more than its rating.

Question

Thanks for the input! Fast46, you are right about the torque being useful for towing, that it why it is such a priority with me and is at the top of the list for consideration when it comes to dumping money into my truck. I tow a 21' bass boat and I want as much of that low range stuff as I can get. Again, I wonder what the effect would be of combining a Superchip with the shift kit?? I know they both do close to the same thing, the only difference being one is a mechanical mod and the other an electronic. I prefer the mechanical because I know that my tranny is gonna get more miles without all that slipping that Ford has to incorporate into their tranny's for the "sissy's" out there who don't want to feel there truck shift gears!!

The superchip will make a big shifting difference. Most members here notice the shifting difference first! I heard though that it also makes the tranny last longer.
That sloppy Ford shifting bugs me too.

Well i had 2 ford trucks. one with 4.2 v6 and now i got the 4.6 triton. Ive also diven my buddys 4.8 vortec chevy. the 4.8 out classes my 4.6 triton the over head cam of the ford doesn't lug up step grades like the 4.8 does. the 4.6 doesn't have the touque where you need it. if you look at all ohc motors the torque is always higher in the rpm range. And the same for the jap trucks. give me an old ford 302 or 351 pushrod motor any day over these no torque untill 4000 rpm ohc motors.
