I feel kind of like a dumb a**. I have bought 2 different oil filter wrenches and still can't get the oil filter off my 03 F150. It's a tight fit and I'm getting frustrated with it.

 

it can be a pain have u tried the screw driver trick?? Take a hammer and long screw driver and put the screw driver threw the filter. Its a tight fit but id try it. I've never been able to get my filter off by hand. And usually I can on all my familes cars I tightne them all the same hmmm weird. Oh well

 

Wolfdidditz, have you seen the one that you use a socket wrench with?? I don't suggest using a hammer and screw driver, sometimes paietience is required, just like the other day my fuel filter wouldn't come off and I was really thinking about cutting it off... Link below for the tool...

"Google" for ' KD' Tools for # 2029 Filter Wrench...works great !!

 

And a friendly bit of advice if you are new to Ford trucks - use Motorcraft 5W-20 semi-synthetic oil and a Motorcraft FL-820S filter. Both are available at Walmart. Whatever you do, do *NOT* put a Fram "orange can of death" on it.

 

Where is the filter on the 03?

I have a 99 5.4 4x4 and it is right up in the fender well on the drivers side. Very easy and accessible. I have read something about a relocation kit? Is my location not stock? I think my manual even said it was up above the T-Case or something. Sure glad it wasnt.

...but wish the fingers were deeper, to get a better /deeper grip on the filter. I'm sure there are some out there that are deeper.

for the most part it works well, I usually put extensions on & give a couple of smakes to collapses the dome of the filter, then it bites better.

I agree it is a booger to get to.

 

I wouldnt use the screw driver deal you could rip the filter in half and end up having to call a wrecker because you cant get it off. If there stuck like that take it in and have it done..

 

The filter on my Audi 2.7T is always stuck on from heat. I have broken numerous wrenches and had to buy a heavy duty wrench that I could use a cheater bar on... imagine that yea. But, good news is, someone told me try to slip a piece of sand paper between the filter wrench and filter and try it that way... First time I tried it, with no cheater bar, came right off. I faced the grit toward the filter. Cut a strip about 1" wide and 6 or so inches long and put it between the wrench once I had it over the filter. Turned it tight and gave it a quick tug, came off. You should try that.

Did that once a while back on my ranger.. outcome was not good.

 

Some models came with the relocation kit, behind the front bumpers. Others were just mounted to the block above the transfer case... like mine.

I had to use the sand paper deal in the past too...it does work...just a bit tricky to get everything in there to stay well enough to put into action...but that was on a vertical mount filter.

The screwdriver situation can turn ugly fast...worked better back in a day when material on the outer casing was a bit heavier/thicker and you had bit more room.

that is what is appealing with the K&N filters, they have a nut on the end of the filter....not sure how they rate for filtration though

 

A K&N OIL filter is a very high quality filter - it's the same internals as a Mobil 1 filter. It's designed for extended drain interval synthetic oil.

 

Whatever method you choose, do yourself a favor and don't overtighten the new filter. Tighten until gasket contact and then maybe a half turn more.
