Phaser help!?

Hi guys, new to this forum, not forums in general though, Im on powerstrokenation and powerstroke.org.

So I have a 2nd truck to my stroke, '04 f150 4x4 5.4 3v Auto. Sick of it sounding like a diesel at idle, so I did a good bit of research and decided to change my phasers.

Started this morning following instructions that are in write up section here, I figured I would only do 1 today to make sure it solves the problem and I dont run into any snags.

Got it done, put it all back together cranked, started right up let it idle and warm up, no more tapping on that side, YAY!

Well, took a test drive and quickly got the wind removed from my sails. If you put your foot to the floor, it almost seems like it misses, or powerband is not smooth, not too noticable.

Accelerate normally you dont notice anything until TC locks and 4th gear 45mph 1200rpm, keep slowly accelerating from that point and it feels like is starts to buck or miss, like a thud, until you get above like 1900rpm.

What did I do wrong, what should I be looking for?

Thanks!

Questions

Questions:
How many miles on the motor? How many on the Plugs? Brand?
Did you reset the ECM?
Did you clean the VCT solenoid screens?

Without the Phaser swap in the picture it sounds just like a bad COP with my next choice being bad plug.

IF it's related to the Phaser swap then I would say that your timing is off by a tooth. Because the cam is under load from one or more valve springs in mid cycle, it's hard to get the phaser to timing chain alignment correct. If your motor has high miles then it could also be off by a tooth coupled with a worn chain tensioner.

Yes (Unhooked battery when working on it)
No, I just ordered 2 of those though.

Next project after changing out the other phaser is change all plugs and COP's

Sound like the timing is out, but that will thorw a code eventually.
Try your plugs and coild first if they had to be done anyway

No codes yet, and I've driven it 200 miles..... It actually seems to have quit doing it, or doing it way less frequestly.

8 cop's and plugs are on order for this week

VCT Solenoides

Try swapping the VCT solenoids and see if you get a different CEL code? if it's a bad solenoid I think you'll get code P0021? (bank 2 over retarded).

Ok guys, I took the truck all apart, completely re-timed it, replaced both VCT's, hoped it would run well... NOPE!

So then I replaced all 8 plugs and COP's.... NOPE!

The thing idles horrible, and has no power, any ideas??

Oh yeah, no codes now, and the exhaust smells terrible

Bad Smell

Exhaust smells like gasoline then it's a vacuum leak, bad O2 or bad MAF.
Exhaust smells like bad eggs then it's bad CATs

Any funny sounds?

Not really any funny sounds, sounds like it runs like crap lol

If I unplugged the O2's or maf, would it go to a default and work better, just to verify thats the problem?

EDIT:

I guess it does kinda smell like sulphur... And I drove it around the block, got under and 1 of the CATs is GLOWING!

So cats?

Well after driving it around the block again I hooked my AE back up to it and I have P0171, P0174, P2198.

Any ideas?

Based on P2198 (biased o2 sensor on bank 2, sensor 1, stuck rich) sounds like you have a bad o2 sensor on bank 2 (driver side i think). This would mean the engine is senses rich so the computer withholds fuel causing the rough idle. You should be able to monitor the O2 sensors with AE and see if that is an issue. Another way to test, is to go to WOT (wide open throttle), that will cause the computer to go into open loop and ignore the o2 sensors.
