5.4L Engine Knock 160k
I have a 2005 5.4 triton with 160k miles on it. I have had a knock sound for at least 100k. It recently got louder. I also have the diesel sound at about 900 rpm. I have been reading the past posts about the Cam Phaser and it's problems in this engine. If I hear the distinct knock like one lifter knocking and the diesel rattle sound at lower RPM's does this sound like the cam phaser or something else. Should I not expect many more miles out of this engine anyway at 160k? Would it be worth fixing at this point?

you might be time & money (more time anything else) ahead to get a good running engine out of a salvage yard and just do a swap. unless you don't mind having the truck down for a while...the swap gets you back on the road faster.
It depends on how much you're willing to put into it and if willing to keep it...they can run much longer....then there is the issue with 05's and injectors. I just seen a 04' with over 190k and looked amazing...& obviously well taken care of.
If it were mine I'd get a engine and tranny out of a salvage yard, maybe a 07' or so...get them checked and do a swap...just my .02 worth

Fix the problem
I have 265K on my 2004. Had a bad knock and loss in power and thought is was the cam phasers. When I placed a stethoscope on different parts of the top end I found the noise was coming from above the # 3 cylinder. Took the valve cover off and found one badly worn rocker and two slightly worn ones. Replaced all the rockers on bank one and she is running like NEW! The 5.4 is a great motor if you change the oil, plugs on time. Cam phasers and injectors are known problems on 2005's and with a little time and a few "how to" articles the motor should last 300K plus.
