What is the best starter money can buy?

Ok so I am pulling my engine out tomorrow and I am thinkin that when I reinstall it i should put a new starter on it. The starter sits right behind my headers and would be a total nightmare to change once the headers are reinstalled.. So I want to find the best starter I can. I am interested in a mean green, and have found really good reviews about them.. Anyone have any other suggestions?? Thanks

Probably a little pricey, but they are supposed to be built to withstand the worst thrown at them. If you have headers that expose it to more heat than factory original, if there is ANY way you can shroud the heat from reaching it, that would be a DEFINITE PLUS.

Purchase the OEM , Bosch for the LIFETIME Warranty! - I've NEVER had one go bad in 300,000 miles.

I managed to go thru 3 of them tho. - Only because I break that wussy 10mm nut and post off the piggy back, - if I look at it funny.

But, the Bosch you get today has upgraded connectors supposedly, (?). So , headers never had an effect, - but mine are wrapped. All the heat flow out behind me, - that good sound as well.

My last one had a double 10mm nut and fitting w/machined post + a special pig-tail w/heat shrink connector. So far so good.

I wouldn't purchase any other when referring to starters.

Thanks for the advice Jbrew! I can't tell if the starter I pulled was OEM or not.. It was working just fine before so maybe I will just stick with it.. I will see if I can get the part # off of it..

So I cleaned off the starter and found a tag that says remanufactured part # DL3299S... so i am guessing it's not OEM.. bummer

Okay, the entire story, since I left a few parts out -

Yea, you have to purchase the OEM Bosch replacement once, -If you haven't done so yet. Pay for it once. I had to. I think it was $140 -$160, something like that. Just make sure you purchase the Bosch OEM replacement (factory) w/lifetime warranty.
These were used at the factory, still are , they have went thru many revisions, -fully updated and they come with a letter from Ford Motor saying so.
What happened to me, - I would take the cables loose on mine to service the connections from winter salt corrosion. While doing do so, I would bust the small post (10mm) every-time. Nut and post corrosion fused which eventually caused a bad connection in time.

Damn good starters, just use to have a weak point at the connection which has been solved (TSB letter).

I purchased mine @ ORiely's. I'm in their database and don't need a receipt for a full replacement. Just the part.

Awesome, that sounds much better then 240 more a mean mean.. plus my engine is a low compression lightning so a high torque starter is overkill.. I winder if napa can order that starter, that's the only part store where I live.. Also Jbrew, is that starter a new or reman?

Nope, not a reman, it's new, that's what you want. Your replacement will be new as well.

It even smells new lol. I have some pics somewhere. Offline I expect, I can't find them here. I'll post them up in a little bit, if I can locate them.

Well, not the pics I was looking for, but this was starter number one, beside the factory starter -

I'll keep looking, I know I have some better shots somewhere of #2 and 3.

Of course. I don't use it in the crankcase tho. Always run Motorcraft or Castrol Blend. But, everything else is Amsoiled.
