Mystery Oil Loss

Over the past two months I have had problems with a mysterious loss of oil in my 2002 F150. It has 105,000 miles I have maintained it in almost mint condition but as stated I have lost oil twice in the last two months. I park in the same spot all the time, no evidence of oil loss here. It never smokes, the tail pipe is clean and I just got it back from the garage and they could not find any problems. The problem is this, two months ago the oil pressure light went on, so I checked the oil and determined that it was almost dry. I took it too the garage and they replaced the gasket on the oil drain plug put in (6) quarts of synthetic oil (5w -30w) and sent me on my way. On Monday the same thing happened after driving from Chattanooga to Atlanta. Oil gauge needle dropped, oil light came on. I stopped the truck let it cool and checked the oil. No oil registered on the dipstick. Put (5) quarts in, and drove back to Chattanooga on Tuesday. Took it to the garage this morning and they could not find any problem. My question is this, where did the oil go. It does not burn it, it does not leak it, but yet it has disappeared. Any suggestions???

I would check the pcv system. Also, it's common for these trucks to burn oil with no indication of it. A lot of people around here will tell you they burn an average about a quart between changes. No smoke on start up or any other signs of burning it. But check the pcv valve and make sure it is a motorcraft and in working order. Otherwise, excessive blow by and oil can pass the upper intake, trapping some in the lower plenum and burning the rest. By the way, it only takes 1 missing quart of oil and it wont register on the dip stick. Hope your not over filling.

I'd just get a new ford PCV and be done with that but thats allot of oil to loose through the PCV system.. The light doesent come on until you loose pressure so you gotta be down 3-4 quarts at least at that point. You better start checking the oil..

Yep, use a Motorcraft ONLY PCV valve. Sounds like your using a Fram lol. Never use Fram anything for these engines. That place needs to be burnt to the ground.

If she can't breath thru the PCV system, she'll suck oil right from the breather.. Not kidding. Pull the air intake and look inside the throttle body. If there's a small river of oil; bottom of the TB, - Bingo. You'll find quite a bit more in the lower intake, if that's the case.

I believe it's 2 quarts. Maybe just a taste more. But it is 2 at the very least. That's pretty much standard for the big three when referencing the 4-8 cylinders engines anyway. Except for their diesels of coarse.

When it's not on the stick, -dump a couple quarts, then check it. Still not on the stick ? Well,

Weird. I'm going by memory here since my current truck doesn't burn oil. But, my last truck burnt about a quart between changes. I was taking it to a shop at that point. One day I checked the oil and nothing was on the stick, panicked and brought it to the shop thinking it was down 2-3 quarts and had them top it off. Then asked him how much he put in there and he would claim it was only a quart low, or a tad more. Then I started changed my own oil with motorcraft and whenever I would check it, if it was real low on the stick or not showing up at all I would add a quart and put it back in the marks. Maybe I got a funky stick. Or my memory is no good

I have discovered that if I drive 85 or so for an extended time, my engine uses oil, or blows it out. If I keep it 75 or under, it barely moves on the stick in 4000 miles.
