Talking 5.4 3v swap in an '01 - Finally!!

I started a thread on this a couple times when I thought I was close to doing the swap, but have been kept too busy by work and kept delaying it. So, I waited until actually underway to make sure I didn't shoot another blank....

The 2v motor is out, 3v has been in....and is now out again... After ****ing around quite a while yesterday trying to get the engine in the mounts I realized the sump section on the 3v pan extends further forward and won't clear. Its hanging from the hoist right now while I get some lunch and then I'll finish swapping the oil pan and pickup from the 2v and drop it back in.

The other thing I discovered yesterday that I should have noticed sooner is that the power steering pump mounts higher on the 3v. I have my fingers crossed that the lines will reach and it won't hit anything. That moves also forced me to use the oil filter mount from the 3v, which points the radiator hose and oil filter in different directions than the 2v, so I have my fingers crossed there too as I haven't been able to see it nestled down in for clearances.

Will update with some pics later...

Not a chance.......unless someone sends me the blower and a built trans....

Trans, starter, and converter are bolted up.....longtubes are next but I have to grind every one of my stage 8 bolts shorter as they are now going into 1/4" thick adapter plates so that will take a while. The power steering pump is in heavy conflict with the abs controller, but that sits on a massive bracket that looks like it just needs to have a chunk cut off to clear. Breaks over...to the grinding wheel I go....

If you have the correct die handy install it on the bolt before you grind it and all you need to do is unscrew it to chase any burs on the bolt threads from grinding.

Good advice. If you don't have the die (I don't) you can just thread a nut on first, doesn't clean up the threads quite as well but good enough to get the bolts started. I just finished all 16 and thats it for today. I also layed the wiring harness back in and the only change I should have to make is to lengthen the IAT pigtail. The 3v has it in the passenger head instead of driver side, which puts it further away from the plug on the harness.

You mean for the engine that I'm half done installing?

Just found another issue.... I was planning to drop in my current 24lb injectors but they are the fatter older EV1 type and won't clear the intake. So...I'm searching for either a slim injector with the older plug, or harness adapters to run the 3v injectors. Problem there is I just had VMP send me a new tune for the 3v with 24lb injectors, and the stock 3v injectors are 22lb so I'd probably have to pay again for a new tune....dangit....

will the mustang injectors clear??? if they will you can snag aset of cheap ones from the smstang sites from someone who's added boost and larger injectors

you're talking about a harness adapter, does the 3 valve use an EV6??? if they do the adapters are cheap and work well

just don't get the same ones as I did get the solid pieces as they look better

here's a picture of the adapters I use but first here's a link to the ones I wish I had gotten, just for the looks

Mustang and truck, etc... injectors are the same things, not application (or even brand) specific. Most of the EV1 injectors are the fat body, but they do have the slim style with that plug and I was very tempted to just get a new set of 24lb for $170. I decided to just get adapters though, similar to the ones you linked but those go the opposite way (older injectors in a newer vehicle). I'm using the 22lb injectors that came with the 3v, and when I get the truck started I'll set my f.p. at 43.6 instead of 40 to offset the slightly smaller injectors, that should keep the delivery accurate.

I won't have those until tuesday, so that will hopefully be fire-up day. I've got most of it done, but the little stuff will take a while yet. The bracket that holds the abs controller is out for cutting, the stupid thing would hold about 1000 lbs as-is so I don't think it will mind when I lop about half of it off.... Then I've still got the mid-pipes, radiator, e-fans, etc... to put back in, and I've got to make a mounting pad for the throttle cable as the one I made before sits too low. Slow but sure....
