I just bought an 05 FX4 5.4 3v F150 with 80,000 on the clock. I really don't abuse my vehicles, but tonight i put the pedal to the floor for only the second or third time since i bought it last week and the truck did not take off like expected.
As soon as i floored it, it picked up RPM, downshifted, then as the RPM's were climbing (seems to be from 2,500+) it started jerking/hesitating/surging. Like it would hit a strong spot for a second, then it would be flat, then strong, then flat - all in a very short span of time.
I did this a second time, which ended up exactly like the first with the exception of a weird "clicking" type noise (almost like a slight knock/tick sound) coming from the engine bay.
Other issues are: rough idle (not 100% of the time, but most) and there seems to be quite a bit of condensation smoke from the exhaust (more than any other vehicle i've ever owned, even on cold mornings)
I dont believe the plugs have been replaced yet.
Any suggestions? I dont have a problem with off the line power and the shifting seems to be fine.
'05, 5.4 3V, hesitation/jerking under load, tapping/rough idle, smoke from the exhaust, I'll take stuck/leaking injectors for $1000, Alex.
Tote it down to your local dealer and explain to them what happened. The injectors (and related damages from injector failures) on 2005 model year vehicles with 5.4 3V engines are covered for 11 years/120,000 miles.

Nothing, really. Maybe the fuel pump driver module acting up, but the tapping gave it away. that's knocking/pinging from raw fuel getting dumped into the cylinders.
Tread carefully from this point. Like a jackass, I went out to the parking lot at work one day to get an Expedition that had been towed in with two or three stuck injectors and it didn't dawn on me to not crank the engine since the cylinders were probably full of fuel. Fortunately, I only broke the bendix on the starter. Worst case scenario, connecting rods could have been bent or broken.
You might wanna consider having it towed in, although Ford will fix whatever breaks as a result of a leaky injector; if you crank it up tomorrow morning and a rod comes out the side of the block, they consider that "related damages" and will fix it.
