Block Heater?

I have a 97' F150 super cab, 4x4, lariat, with the 5.4L. In the market for a block heater for this winter do deal with sub-zero wisconsin nights. Does ford make one specfically for the 5.4L that I could get from the dealer or Aftermarket?

I don't have any experience at all with block heaters as I live in Miami, FL, lol... but I know what they are and a quick google search turned up a couple:

A circulation heater splices into the heater hoses - the simpler block heaters replace a freeze plug.

The pump type cost more but heat better and are easier to install. I believe they use more electricity if that is a consideration. You don't have to drain out all the antifreeze to put one in.

The freeze plug type are cheaper but you will have to drain all the antifreeze. You will also be working in cramped quarters to install it in a freeze plug. The do work well enough. Cars and trucks here come with them installed by the dealer because you need them in the winter here.

Heaters

Before you get one, if it's the covection or pump units, insure that they are compatible with your truck. Some won't work if you have AC in them. Couple of my old vehicles have had them. Easiest one to put in is the freeze plug ones, but it's a mess while doing it provided you can get a slide hammer to one of the freeze plugs.

I'm in the same process.... so does anyone have any particular brands that work best. I'm leaning with the pump style as they are more efficient. Also at what hose does it go in? Lower rad I would assume..

pump type uses alot more energy to run it, dont know how it is more efficient? It goes in the heater core lines... The idea is to circulate the now warmer coolant through the block and heater core only..
