05 F150 Low Oil Pressure

I have an 05 F150 with 59,000 miles. Today my engine killed and said "low oil pressure". After checking all fluids, I restarted it and all was fine. After about 45 minutes, I was almost home and got a display showing "engine fail safe mode" and then it shut down again on "low oil pressure".

Yikes! You may have an oil obstruction somewhere in your engine!

I've only used Penzoil 5W20 and Motorcraft 820S oil filters. Oil is changed every 3000-3500 miles faithfully.

I hope it's nothing serious. Tomorrow morning I'm going to drain the oil and replace it. I just had it changed about two weeks ago. A friend of mine told me if it is overfilled this may happen also. It is showing a little above the full mark.

yea if its overfilled then it could cause more damage then being slightly underfilled sometimes. it may simply be the pressure sender. but do make sure the oil is between the add and full lines instead of above or below. the engine only takes 6 quarts of oil with a new filter.

When you over fill an engine with oil, the crank will swing down and start beating into the oil that is in the pan. It will start to foam and most oils for gasoline engines don't have much in them in the way of antifoaming agents. The oil pressure will drop as the pump is trying to pump the foam and things go downhill from there. If you think you over filled it, change the oil AND the filter ASAP. You'll also want to change oil again at about 1500 miles. There will be wear particles that needs to come out. Running an engine over full is more dangerous than running one low.

I don't see anywhere whether he has a 4.6 or a 5.4. 4.6 should be 6 qts. and a 5.4 should be 7 qts. (from '04-up)

Uh, yeah, if the engine stalls, the "low oil pressure" warning will come up on the dash because the engine isn't running.

Fix your stalling problem first. If it went into fail safe mode, it stored codes, most likely related to the electronic throttle control.

I'm with Quintin on this. I don't think it's a lubrication issue thats shutting you down. Codes..?

Thanks guys, I do have a 5.4L engine. I drained the oil this morning and replaced it along with the filter. I put a code scanner on and it said, "no codes stored". However, after scanning for codes, it did kill shortly thereafter. I'm gonna bring it to a friend of mine tomorrow and he is gonna check it out. I don't really have the time to mess with it myself. I live in Louisiana, and the way the tropics are getting active, I need to be ready for the road. I'll keep you all posted with the outcome.

Just thowing this out there, but could it be as simple as a failed oil pressure switch?

I had the same exact problem in my 05 5.4. And it turned out to be exactly what Quintin stated.

Good luck,

I see it's only been two days, but any updates?
