More bad news for Mobil One users
From Jobbers World:
It would appear as though the Mobil One is failing the API testing on wear. This is the second manufacturer to make a public statement claiming that Mobil One fails the API IVA test. In case you don't understand folks, that means that you are paying a premium price for an oil that is not doing the job of El Cheapo oil and your engine is having larger than normal wear rates. Your truck, your money.
Castrol Edge Claims 8X Better Wear Than Mobil 1
As reported here last July, first Valvoline claimed its Synpower motor oil provided 4X better wear protection than Mobil 1. Then in December Valvoline turned up the heat by further stating that Mobil 1 5W-30 actually failed the Sequence IVA engine test, and not by a small margin.
Now Castrol has jumped on the bandwagon and raised the bar, claiming its new Castrol Edge "provides 8X better wear protection than Mobil 1 5W-30", again citing the Sequence IVA test.
Either Valvoline and Castrol have some amazing new oils, or ExxonMobil has a problem. Even if it turns out they don't have a technical problem, they sure as heck have a marketing challenge. Yet for whatever reasons, they remain silent - at least for now. I'm sure we'll hear from them soon!

Keep in mind, all it takes is for Valvoline or Castrol to outperform Mobil 1 in a single test. Which may or may not have been a bad batch of Mobil. This seems to be the general consensus on several forums I frequent. Personally, I don't like Mobil 1 and I will never use it, but it's kinda hard to draw conclusions about these things based on marketing hype (which is all these claims are) without looking at the actual results and conditions that the test was performed under.

While I have to agree there is some advertising hype here, Valvoline may actually be correct in saying that it has 4 times better wear protection IF the M1 is actually failing the wear test. Note, they claim it failed, and not by a small margin. I find it interesting that Castrol has jumped on the bandwagon 6 month later. That kinda leads me to believe that it is not just one run of M1 that is coming up short but apparently something in the formulation isn't right. M/E has some of the top names in formulations so this really doesn't make sense. But API also reports that around 15% of the oils we buy are not meeting specs. Some exceed add pack levels and others are short. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out. So far, no comment from M/E in the 6 months this has been going on. I would think they would be up in arms to defend their cash cow product unless there was actually something to Valvoline and Castrols claims.
