Engine skip/bucking

Hello, new here. Just bought and registered a 02 4wd super crew. 142,000k.Test drove it two hours yesterday with no problems. Bought it registered it today and low and behold it starts to "skip or what you would call buck when driving. Of course the "check engine light" is on. I call the local stealership and now I think I'm regretting buying the truck. The service history of the truck is very good. So any comforting words or suggestions would help me sleep better tonight.

welcome
motor? you can get your codes read for free at an autozone unless your in california. do you have records of when it was last tuned up? and do you know what brand plugs are in it? i'd say it just needs a tuneup and maybe new cop's.

Common problem - Once you take care of it, you'll be okay.

In this case, the dealership should be taking care of you. If not -What needs to happen first is getting the code read. You can do this free at Auto Zone. Let them scan it / copy down the numbers that come up on their scanner and report them back here.

Do it exactly this way and we'll get her running right for yuh.

Welcome to the site

BTW - Yea , fill you info in..

Hey, thanks much. Took it to Autozone. Readout; "number 7 cylinder misfiring". So what cylinder is #7? Worse case scenario? No compression? Again thanks.

did the truck come with a warranty? you probably just need a new coil and spark plug for cylinder 7. if your doing everything yourself then you may want to get a full set of 8cop's(coil on plug) off ebay for 70-80 bucks and possibly all new plugs. http://shop.ebay.com/items/_W0QQ_nkw...romZR40QQ_mdoZ .
i dought its a compression issue

cylinder order is
front
5 1
6 2
7 3
8 4

Yea - cheaper on Ebay = 8 coils under $100 or you can purchase one coil/plug for #7 @ Auto Zone for around $50.

Replace 7 = third one back from the front of the motor/drivers side. You'll need dielectric grease for the install.

Jesus, I'm reading horror stories of breaking spark plugs when changing. Should I first change the plug to make sure the coil is good or not? Did the 02 triton motors have the spark plug horror?

Seriously?

7mm socket, remove 3rd COP from front on driver's side. Don't forget to unplug it from the harness

Pull COP out

Use socket to remove spark plug, reinstall in reverse order. Don't over tighten the plug and you're good.

if you dont know the service history of the ignition system then go ahead and replace all plugs and COPs.

as mentioned before, buy your COPs off ebay. global automotive seems to be the general consensus around here.

your model engine should have no problems with plugs breaking. matter of fact, these engines tend to spit plugs out haha

You won't break the plugs. That problem is with the 3 valves - You have a two valve. What you want to be careful of is threading in the new plugs. Use a scrap piece of 3/8 hose to do this and you can't go wrong. Their easy to cross thread - Keep that in mind. Once cross threaded, you'll have a head ache. You won't need anti seize either, - not in those heads.

Matts plug link is here -

To use the links in the Tech articles, just cut F150 onlines URL out of the link and hit enter.

BTW- It's a good idea to post what motor we are trying to help you with

The motor is a triton 5.4L. I know there's more than one variation. What do I look for to Properly ID the motor. The local stealership quoted me $100 for the "part" and two hours of labor to change the plug. He said #7 plug is the hardest to work on. Viewed Mattstruck DIY sparkplug change. I'd attempt it if it wasn't 10 degrees out and 12 inches of snow forcast. Thanks everyone for the help. I really want to do as much DIY on this truck as I'm capable.

antiseize is only reccommended for the 5.4 3v engines with the 2 piece plug but only the tip that breaks off. if you use it on other plugs then they could come loose and blow out and then everything just goes down hill from there.
