Radiator replacement needed, any tips?

Sadly,

My Troyer e-fans mounting pins have worn a hole\s in my radiators tubing it's not a huge leak so far, but drips very fast when the truck is hot...the e-fan mounting pins have also messed up the radiator fins........

So, I guess a radiator replacement will be needed. I was looking at this radiator and was wondering if anyone has tried one of these?

My stock radiator is about 1 inch or so think and this one is a 2 core/row and says it's 2.25 inches thick

Is replacing the radiator pretty easy / straightforward? Is there anything special that needs to be done?

I am going to buy the Derale dual 16" mounting brackets Do these work Ok?

I am also going to be installing a SPAL fan controller unit as the Troyer units don't seem to be very dependable for me, I recently had my 2nd one burn out and I won't be installing them again.

I forgot.....I will be needing a new thermostat too....should I stick with the stock 192 degrees? It is a daily driver, with little to no towing duty.

I don't think it will be too difficult, but as always..... any tips are appreciated.

Thanks!

I'm interested in thoughts on this rad as well since I'm in the same boat.

To the OP, I have the Spal controler and am VERY happy with it. Since installing it I have had no issues with it. Also, I'm not sure about that mount you linked to. I had to stagger my Troyer fans, one high & one low, in order to get 100% of the fan covering the rad.

Hope we get some replies; good luck on your install.

BTW - rad replacement is a snap. Drain, pull the 2 hoses, pull the 2 trans lines, remove the 2 hold downs on the core support and the rad lifts right out.

Sweet,

thanks, glad to hear it is a pretty easy swap. My Troyer fans aren't staggered and are mounted more or less in a straight line from one another.

I think you need to rotate them to get them to line up with each other and fit without staggering. Hopefully the Derale mounting bracket will work well as it's the cheapest I have seen.....I am just not sure how it mounts to the radiator and if it will be secure.

Glad to hear the SPAL controller was a good investment , I really disliked the ones that came with my fan kit.

Thanks for the info, the radiator I posted the link to is the best looking / sounding one I have come across so far......

Stick with the 192* thermostat. The engine needs to get up to the correct operating temp. I have the Spal controller and it works great, nearly two years now.
Doesn't Troyer sell a nice set of aluminum side mount brackets??

dual cores are very nice and worth the upgrade.

two 10mm bolts on top, and two big hose clamps and it pops right out

Do the newer models, not have transmission cooling lines on the radiator?

Thanks fellas, sounds like the SPAL controller is a winner. I also bought the relay for the 2nd fan......is that install fairly easy? I'll need to disconnect all my existing controller wiring and wire in the new one.

I will stick with the 192* thermostat, is it in the upper hose mounted at the block inlet?

I will look into other brackets for mounting the dual 16" fans, I was hoping someone would be able to provide some info on the Derale dual fan brackets as the pricing is reasonable and it looks like it should be solid unit.

The radiator swap sounds like a piece of cake, thanks!

Maybe I should be thinking about a larger transmission fluid cooling system? I don't recall reading about an easy bolt in unit for a replacement though, this one looks sweet....but is a bit more complicated with the hoses and all.

Thanks for the tips!

Hahaha, yes.....that is quite a few tranny fluid lines.

I would really like to do the install in SWThomas / GK_crewchief's SD Tran Cooler install, but will probably need to come back to it in the future as it looks like it may take a while to source all the parts that are needed.

Great Info, thanks JBrew!! If you have any links for where to order the kits / parts through that would be great.

I just ordered new new dual core radiator, they said it would ship today and be here Monday....It was $169.00 shipped

Here are how my Troyer fans are mounted.

They cannot cause the fins to leak this way.
