Hello everybody...First post here. I was hoping someone (or multiple someones) could shed some light as to what vehicles I could get an engine out of to go into my 97 F150 Romeo 4.6L. I know the direct drop-in replacement is 97-98 F150/F250LD Romeo 4.6L, but have seen the hollander interchange number as 9094_.

My questions:

1)Can I use any "9094_" engine as long as I change the intake/exhaust manifolds, and swap the timing cover and cam covers? Anything else?

2) How new can I go? Can I use a 4.6l engine from newer f150's...up to say 03? Even if I swap the transmission along with the engine? Of course I'd change out the PCM and modify wiring as needed.

It seems like I can get a pretty good low mileage 4.6 engine and trans, but not for a 97-98 f150. From what I've found, I can get an 03 engine and trans (including harnesses, accessories, and PCM)with less than 50k miles for a little bit more coin than a 98-97 4.6 romeo engine (engine ONLY)with 100k miles.

3) Will an 03 4.6 and 4r70w trans bolt up to my manual shift transfer case?

Pretty sure you get the point. I was going to do a 5.4DOHC swap, but reconsidered when I realized I'd not only have to do the longer torsion bars, but would have to go with the electric shift transfer case thereby having to swap the GEM and replace the dash bezel with a 4x4 switch bezel and run the harness and mount the H2L and L2H relays. It just got to be too much for a 12 yearold truck that has 223k miles on everything else!

any truck 4.6 2v will bolt right in. the newer ones are cop but that doesnt matter as long as you keep the same engine and tune.

 

When you say keep the same engine and tune you mean keep the PCM with its corresponding engine/trans, right?

 

wait i was wrong. any 4.6 up to 2000 will work without a tune because 2001 and later had PI heads. as long as you get a 4.6 without PI heads you wont need to change the tunes in the computer.

OK cool. Anyone know about the hollander interchange and what car engines can be stripped down to the longblock and work in the truck? Does the 9094 interchange number mean the longblock is identical?

For example...4.6l romeo engines:

9094E works for 97-98 Expeditions/F150's and F250LD's.
9094F works in a 1999 Expedition and F150.
9094G works in a 1999 Ford E150 Van .
9094H works in 2000 Expeditions and F150's.
But...
9094A works in 98-99 Crown Vics, Grand Marquis, and Town Car's

SO can I get any 9094 engine, take it down to the long block, put my F150 parts on and go??

 

You can get any 4.6 , 5.4 engine from 97-03 from or to. I took a 4.6 and 4r70w from my 99' and put in a 2002 and 4r70w trans low miles. If you have under 99 4.6, as long as you have the motor harness and trans harness, its pretty easy. Im 20 and i did it almost by myself so wipe the sweat! As far as the tcase shift linkage, if your talking about 4x4 manual shift vs. push on the fly, yes the holes are drilled into every 4r70w that i know FOR SURE. If you look on the tcase, in the back and top you will notice unused sensors, thats for the "push on the fly". JMC has made a build for the 4.6 to 5.4 swap and its pretty handy, if i were you i would print it out and post it to "your hat" as was said to me !

2002 4.6, tossed the COPS and used the 4.6 cp's and ford racing 9mm wires, that, the exhaust size and some wiring extending, its not bad at all. Many people on this forum have done it so there are plenty of threads. To my knowledge, JMC has done it, CAMAROTHATCOULD with the thread "my 5.4 swap" and me with the thread "4.6 to 5.4 swap in progress" thread, search for them, JMCs swap build is in both. Hope that helps, and im sure there will be alot more people to drop by and give you some word.

 

Thanks for the input FRod! So you used a 2002 4.6l engine/trans combo and used your 99 engine/trans harnesses as well as your 99 PCM? I'm guessing you had to fabricate some coil pack brackets? Also which exhaust manifolds did you use...the 99's or 02's? Got my eye on a low mile 03 engine. I'm guessing that I can bolt the '03 engine to my '97 trans????? Or do I want the '03 trans with the '03 engine?

I just want to get this truck running again so I can retire my old '92 flareside!

pulled the 99 4.6 and trans placed a 2002 5.4 and trans, used all harnesses from the 4.6. Luckally i got the 5.4 pcm in the deal, but i will use the 4.6, get it specailly tuned for the 5.4. I bought pacesetter long tube headers, tossed the manifolds too. The torque converter is different in the 5.4 vs the 4.6, unless your 97 was a 5.4. Camarothatcould used his 4.6 torque converter so i think it will be alright! 03 will go in just fine, but if i were YOOU, i would get the trans and torque converter with it, always talk em' down. If its a personal seller, tell them to keep in mind with the price that there is no warranty against something not running. For instance, mine came from a rolled truck, no warranty, i got it for a goooood price.
