P0171 (System too lean bank 1), P0174 (System too lean bank 2)

I keep getting these 2 CEL codes. I already replaced the fuel filter. The truck doesnt lack power, doesnt start hard and doesnt backfire.

How many miles? it could be o2 senors i know when my driver side o2 went back the driver side bank spark plugs were BLACK and the passenger side ones were fine. i had 127,000 miles when i changed my o2's gained some MPG's out of it to. Look for a vacum leak and see if your PCV is still good. Good luck

No, the O2 sensors are fine, they are doing their job and REPORTING a lean condition that is beyond compensation. If only ONE bank was reporting lean, then it MIGHT be sensor related.

Major vacuum leak, most likely the PCV elbow. That's what it is 90% of the time on these trucks.

Yup, it was a PCV elbow. Where the line comes off of the PCV valve and goes into the passenger side of the intake it had a little hole in it.

im getting the same readings on my 4.6. (106k) i already cleaned the t-body and elbow, replaced the infamous rubber vac elbow on the back of the intake. replaced the fuel filter and cleaned the MAF sensor. spark plugs are a month old. I checked the vac lines like 6 times and cant find any issues there. it was very rough at idle and is now much better but still reading lean both banks and stuttering at about half throttle and not as much at open throttle.
any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Lucky me I just got the same two codes today. First CEL in 11yrs/137,000mi.
Engine still runs great and idles smooth. I'm also been getting a whiff of coolant lately when I open the hood but I see none on the motor and coolant level remains the same. Could the coolant smell point to the intake gaskets? Does the intake even have coolant passages?

Which engine, rocco? If it's a 4.2 V6, you need manifold and front cover gaskets.

If it's a V8 - Jam your head between the alternator and drivers side valve cover. Now look down behind the water pump. The O-rings give way after about 6 years or so. The HC supply line plugs into the back of the WP - That's right where they leak .

Its a 1997 4.6. I'll try to get some light down there and check that hose out. Hopefully I can repair it with maybe just an alt.removal. If not I'll bite the bullit and pull off the intake and do the gaskets. thanks for the replys
