460 into 94 f150?

Probably Same question here
I have a 1993 F150 2x4 with a 5L 302. I have spent $8500 in last 2 years on body and front end/brakes and all. My trany was rebuilt about 5 years ago with a shift kit and beefed up shift plates. The guy who did it said these trucks had 2 styles of trany's and showed me the difference on diameter of the plates and said mine are the bigger there as well,
My engine is almost cooked and love my truck so I am looking into crate engines. Yesterday my friends uncle told me I could have his 460 but it burns some oil. (from a 76 F150)
My dilema....Is it worth rebuilding and will it fit on my trany??? I know this is carbaurated so is this a big prtocess? I have 6 years of agricultural mechanics experience but have never done anything like this.
Thanks for your help

I'm sure putting a 76 vintage 460 into a 93 is reasonably easy, but a 76 has no electronic controls. This is probably going to require a proper tranny to go with it, one that's not electronically controlled. The 93's had the AOD and the E4OD. The former is not electronically controlled, but it's too light duty for a 460, the E4OD is electronically controlled. You would probably have to find a C6, which is bulletproof but does not have overdrive.
If you have a E4OD, your best bet for an engine replacement is another 302, a 351, or a later model 460 that's set up for electronic controls.

could anyone tell me what type of transmission would be good for an 86 460 big block im not very good on transmission types i only know some what, should i get a c6 or an E40D i heard that the E40D's are the heavy duty ones but i want something that will optimize performance in my 460 also but not fall apart while im towing

For towing and working the truck I would go with the C6 . If you take the engine to a machine shop and have it freshened up-Rings,bearings and rebuild the heads, I'd say $800-$1,100 is what you will find. you can re use your cam and lifters but if you want to wake it up a bit and gain some torque install a pre 72 timing chain and gears. In late 72 ford retarded the cam timing 8* If I remember rite,In the 385 series 429-460's To help meet upcoming emmision restrictions. If you can find an Edelbrock performer intake that would be a nice addition also. If you can read and have the mechanical ability to do your own brakes you can do this work yourself and save alot of money. You have plenty of help here If you get in a spot.

A E4OD is the exact same tranny as a C6, with 2 exceptions - the C6 is a 3 speed, the E4OD is a 4 speed with overdrive; the C6 is vacuum/mechanically controlled, the E4OD is electronically controlled. They are both considered medium duty transmissions and are the same strength. Nothing stronger will fit in a F-150.

While they are similar they are far from exactly the same. In this APP he would be better off buying the bauman stand alone controller for the E4OD $800.00 OUCH. And when the C6 gets warm the pressure relief valve won't stick blowing the front seal. While the E4OD is a stout trans it is very fussy and not heat tollerant also everything has to be just so to be reliable. Even in the event the C6 should require a rebuild it can be done at 1/4 the cost of rebuilding a E4OD.
