Gears... Stock to a 4.88 i think its called

I have stock gears now, Im putting on a lift and getting anywhere from 35s to 37s should i change my gears? im a noob when it comes to anything with a truck so im not sure the advantages/ disadvantages plus i hate it when i try to light them up only one wheel spins is this due to the gears also? any help would be greatly apreciated

wrong area but you'll probably be better off with 4.88's if your wanting to go over 35". if you want more traction look at the detroit locker. i have been running one for quite a while. i have 37k on my tires and i still have enough tread life to run them on the road. just not in the mud

its a 4.46 effective gear ratio. I love it. 38's down the road.

haha woops being a noob i thought gears were in the tranny so 4.46s are ok? how would i go about putting something like that in? and what stops both of my tires from spinning when i try to peel out or something i was told something bout not a solid axel or something?

You're good buddy. We were all there at one point as well. You have gears in the tranny and then gears in the rear end as well. People change the rear end gear ratio to increase performance. To clarify one thing, I dont think they make 4.46 gears. When I said that I have "a 4.46 EFFECTIVE gear ratio, I mean that with 4.88's in my truck along with the 35 inch tires, my truck drives like it would if I had stock tires and 4.46 gears instead of the 3.73's/3.55's that come from the factory. If you 35's you dont have to, 37's you will need to. What size engine do you have? That is a big factor as well. You could install gears yourself or have a shop do it. Please do not take offense to this, but judging the fact that you are a noob to this, you should probably pay a shop to do the work. Its expensive, but a very precise job. As far as your peelout situation, you probably have an open differential in the rear. You can upgrade this when you get your gears installed. I hope this helps. Don't hesistate to ask more questions. Thats what were here for.

I have the 4.6 and i will most definitly have a shop instal my new gears do the gears help performance or whats with them... maybe a little faster with the bigger tires i would assume

gears determine how hard your engine has to work to get your tires moving. It's just like a bike, go hop on one and try to start pedaling in 10th gear, then try it in 1st. the gear at the pedal stays the same (engine) it's the gear at the wheel thats different. if you have to spin the pedal say 10 times to make the wheel spin once it's easier than having to spin the pedal 1 time to get one wheel rev. PS if you regear you will run higher RPM's (not much maybe 300) at most speeds. but it's healthier for your engine, and your legs if you have the right gears to get you moving. and yes you will have better acceleration because it will take less effort to move the beast that is your truck
