7.3 and 5.8

why on earth did ford stop making these engines..i mean in a 3/4 ton you get either a 5.4 or a v10...theres nothing in between which is what most people would want...they need the 5.8 back...and 7.3 was a good diesle engine and the biggest is a 6.0...wats wrong with ford?!?!?!?!?!

i think its mostly due to emissions regulations set by the feds. the 5.4 is has more power and is more effecient.

Emissions and fuel economy. Current diesel is a twin turbo 6.4 and there's a gas 6.2 V8 coming probably next year.

The 5.4 runs circles around the 5.8 and the V10 is as strong as the old 460.

Because the 351 sucked and there's no way in hell Ford could have slipped the 7.3 past the EPA.

but in praise of the 7.3, it has plenty of potential in stock form.

The 7.3 was an awesome motor. Out on the road late 90's early 2000 - I heard they were unreal when chipped. Later on , chipped 7.3's started having problems with just quiting at high speeds - they would go dead. Problem was the after market chip. I think it would screw up after awhile or something like that.

Anyway, mann can that 7.3 pull - think it was an international motor.

I don't no sh^t about the 6.0 except that there still trying to work the bugs out. I test drove a nice low mileage 3/4 ton with a 6.0 last week, I wasn't impressed - nice lookin truck tho.

The problem with the actual "chips" is that many people don't clean the contacts on the back of the pcm's well enough and that causes it to just shut down. I was having problems with my old escort with the contacts not being cleaned properly and that causes the vehicle to just shut down.

The 6.0's have a LOT more power in stock form and also when chipped as compared to the older 7.3's. My dad has a 99 chipped 2wd 7.3 and my truck runs very close to it.

well my dads 7.3 is having turbo issues, but man it would walk all over my truck with a load. although i dont know about this 5.4 vs 7.3 now... i think 8psi boost WHENEVER i get it sorted out and running is gonna give that diesel a run for the money.

The reason a lot of the 7.3's have turbo issues with the chip is because they don't have a pyrometer and have no idea what there EGT's are at and that starts to chew on their turbos. With your new motor you will chew on that 7.3. With only a few bolt ons I am running with the chipped diesels right now, I am expecting to beat many once I get to full bolt on

That's right, I remember that now. About two years ago a guy at work was having that problem - I wrote the chip number down and looked it up here. That was what I found - cleaning the contacts was said to be the fix. I printed some stuff off for the dude and gave him the info.

He said he tried cleaning and re-installing but it didn't work. But really , who knows what damage was done to the chip in the process. This guy never cleaned his truck once since new lol.

The 6.0 I test drove with the sales girl and she was cute as hell. We were talking about her recent divorce while i was focusing on her nice legs. So , I was sorta sidetracked and not giving the truck my full attention - I 'll have to take that for another ride without that distraction. - The truck I mean.

When that happens many people will reclean the contacts but most of the time some of that gel crap gets stuck in the chip itself which obstructs the contacts from the inside. Superchips actually voids your warranty if you just stick the chip on there without cleaning the contacts which is probably what the guy did. You really have to take your time cleaning up the contacts, when done properly you will not have any issues at all.
