What is a 4.6 Windsor???

I mean I have heard of 351W as opposed to a 351C, but is there any difference in a windsor vs a non windsor, or is that just the origin of assembly????

Also how do you tell if your motor is one? (is ther a number in the VIN?)

Now I am not sure about this but I think that all 4.6's are Romeo engines which are assembled at the Romeo plant. They are a little different than the Windsor engines, but do not remember what the difference is other than the heads.

I think the only difference is the valve covers.
One has more bolts then the other.

My 97 F150 has a 4.6 Windsor engine. It was made in the Windsor, Ontario plant. There are internal differences from the 4.6 Romeo engine in addition to the valve covers. Some say the Windsor engine is built with more strength.

The Windsor triton 4.6 had floating wrist pins and a bigger con rod. The cam caps on the Windsor are individual caps and on the Romeo they are a ladder type. The number of cam cover bolts differ. The timing chain guides are different. The Romeo crank has 6 bolts and the Windsor has 8. The Romeo crank caps have cap cross screws and the Windsor has bolts. The Windsor main caps also have dowels. The Windsor 4.6 is a little beefier.

Good info to know. I have another question to add for anyone that has an idea. (My manual does not answer this for me.)

How does the VIN code #'s tell you what motor specific you have? For instance I have a 4.6 Triton with a VIN code #6.

Thanks!

A 6 in the 8th digit indicates a Windsor....oddly enough if it had a W it would be a Romeo.....

The differences between the two are minor, and the major specs like heads (actual port shapes), cams, and intakes are the same for all PI engines (4.6, 5.4, Lightning, etc.. included).

KUEL!

Mine has the 6 in the VIN# and it also has a "W" following the 6. I wonder if that is an indication? Im sure it isn't related.

Thanks for the info!!!!

I learn something new every day, (rather I want to or not, LMAO!)

Yep. You're way more likely to have a plug blow out with a windsor engine than a romeo engine. The windsor heads which are on all 5.4L's and the windsor 4.6l's like you have, have the notorious heads

It hasn't been installed from factory since 1974, and, is no longer in production.

i don't think they could be brought up to emissions standards, and also the japs were kicking our butts on tollerances and longivity

They were also junk, they were notorious for spun bearings due to a badly desined oiling system. The only thing the Cleveland (335 series) small blocks were good for was the heads.
