High idle at start up

High idle at start up
My 05 5.4l idles at about 1600 rpm when first started after sitting. It does not drop down until I shift it into gear. If I hit the throttle alittle it just revs up alittle and settles back at 1600rpm. If the truck is only sitting for like 10-30mins between starts it idles at normal rpms, around 800 or so I think. Outside temps dont make any difference. the truck has 38k on it. Any ideas??

if I give a quick burp of the throttle it just settles to 1600 again no lower, until I shift into gear then with the brake on it will idle at 800 or so.

so what your saying is when it's cold outside I can expect it to start and idle at 2200 rpm. sounds pretty off to me.

it's constant at 1600. not like other vehicles when it goes high and starts to drop. I'm not an idiot. It's like I'm starting it with my foot on the gas and leaving it there.

I tried fuel cleaner and higher grade gas and it made no difference even when the temps were in the 80's. you think its something to be concerned about or let it go??
I tell ya what, its not that cold here in Tx but it is 50 or so in the morning. Tomorrow I will see what she idles at and for how long and report back. Once we compare some numbers we can see if it ok or needs to be checked out. I will post the results before 10am

thats actually my biggest problem with it. I want an exhuast kit for my truck but I'm afraid with the idle so high I will wake everyone when I leave my girls house late at night, lol.

It takes 15-25 seconds or so for it to drop down and it doesnt really drop much at all. maybe to like 1200 rpm. Until I shift into gear.

Ok sounds good! It's getting down to about 35 - 40 at night here. But it revs the same when it's in the 70's in the middle of the day, so it's hard for me to try it myself ,lol!!
Thanks for the help! Looking foward to some results!

My '05 4.6 hits about 1800 or so when I first crank it, then drops to about 1100 immediately and takes about 45 seconds after that to settle at 750.. That's a cold start, when warm it still revs up on cranking but comes down to 750 right away.
What you're seeing sure isn't normal, I'd definitely take it in while ya still have warranty coverage.
I've got a cai, cat-back and Troyer tunes but it's always done the same thing, ever since new and stock..
