Years back when thet made the change to the lighter oil there was a TSB that stated it was for the slight increase in fuel economy to meet the CAFE standards. It wasn't long after that the TSB mysteriously dissapeared.

The benifit of the 5W-20 is that it will get to the bearings faster. And at high temps it will flow easier to disapate heat better. My 1985 ranger has 285,000 miles on it with nothing but 10W-30 oil in it. Works just fine. I'm not saying 5W-30 won't work in our trucks. I am saying that the 5W-20 is what is recommended by the manufacturer. They spend the money in development and are trying to make a quality product. They know far better than a shade tree mechanic.... myself included. They are also making a product for a BROAD spectrum of different people. So for warantee issues they are doing what is best over all. Just don't come on here and start talking smack like you know more than FOMOCO about what is best for your truck that they designed and built. Fact is, you don't.

Chris 1450 well stated I couldn't agree more.

Not sure what the paranoia is about 5W-20. Are you running hot or something? Do you think Ford would want to incur more warranty repairs by recommending bad oil or do you think the science is there for a planned breakdown right after the warranty runs out by using 5W-20? I did notice a drop in mileage using 100% synthetic rather than Ford's blend. Try it yourself. The reason I signed up here is to find out how to get the fuel door open for additives. My truck did not come with the funnel (which most people realize they need a funnel) so I bought one designed for the application. The fuel door still won't open. Tricks anyone?

Still own and drive daily my 1999 F150 Ext. Cab truck with a 4.6L V8 with over 256,000 miles using nothing but 5W-20 oil from the day I drove it new off of the dealer's lot! I also didn't get the paranoia from reading this thread.

I know this is old but I want to tell you I have been having some trouble with my 2006 F150 5.4 ,so I got out the extended warranty papers to see if it might take care on it and found in the small print that I had to get my oil changed at a facility to get it recorded to the vin # . OK , the other thing was I had to have this done every 3 months or 3000 miles to be good . I always do every 3000 but I do it myself . So guess what , I paid for nothing . So always read the fine print . Another lesson learned the hard way .

ford is recommending 6 month 6000 miles for oil changes. Extended warranty's are scams. That they put something like that in there proves it. I would fight with them over it. If your not maintain that should be grounds for denial but when the engine is dismantled it it obvious weather or not your maintain it. Not based on where you take it.

beating a dead horae

I saw that this thread had been revived so I just wanted to add my two cents. My current F150 has around 175 k on it. It is a 2002 with the 4.6. Per the previous owner, it's had 5w-30 for the last 4 years he owned it. Thats what I use. It has a little bit of piston slap when cold and averages 19mpg on the highway.

My car is a 2004 Crown Victoria with the police package. It was a K9 unit up until around 90k I believe. I have around 160k on it and use Motorcraft synthetic blend 5w-20. It has had that since new. I change it every 3k and average 26.5 on the highway. It runs flawlessly and quiet.

The service vans we have at work are mostly E series vans with the 5.4 (I think one has a 4.6) they have been getting 10w-30 since the warranty expired on them (most are early 2000 to later 2000) these vans have a minimum of 200k on them. They are used hard. Lots of short trips, long idling, ect. The all run strong and tick very slightly. It may just be an exhaust leak. All the oil they get is just bulk Shell. Just wanted to share my experience. Not looking to change any minds.
