How to turn off Check Engine Light

I changed one of my COPs last night. It was coil #5 and now my engine runs great. However, the check engine light is still on. How can I turn it off?

Thanks,
John

If you actually fixed the problem, it should turn itself off. If memory serves me correctly (and it probably doesn't) the local repair shop said to me many years ago you had to have 5 starts and drive at least 40 some-odd miles for the light to clear (or something along those lines).

Or, go to Autozone.

Or, go to Harbor Freight on-line and buy a $40 code reader. It'll reset the light.

You shouldn't have a light if you followed the correct procedure with a COP changout.

Step 1 - Disconnect Neg terminal on battery..

If you unhook your battery now, you'll have to reprorogram all your radio stations.

Just look in your owner's manual for the fuse layout. Locate the fuse for "PCM". This is usually a 5A or so fuse. Pull it and wait 15 minutes. Reinstall it and allow your PCM to relearn parameters.

exactly which fuse varies by model year which you failed to provid. For example, on a 97, it's in the underhood mini-fuse box. A 2000 uses F2 in the underdash fuse panel, etc.....

Anyway, just look in your owner's manual.
