Performance lag with 5.4 vs. the 4.6???

I own an 06' f150 with the 5.4 but had recently drove an f150 with a 4.6... the big thing that I noticed was that there is less of a performance lag with the 4.6...in other words...you step on the gas and the truck reacts quicker than the reaction in the 5.4?...Not sure about the reasons...diff gearing?????

Anyone else notice this??

Were they both the same year??? Your's is a throttle fly by wire and if the 4.6 was older it has a cable throttle body. These's newer trucks remind me of Fords speed density trucks back in the late 80's. Give it some gas at a stop and wait a second for the computer to catch up.

That is the only drawback I can say between my old 2000 that had the 4.6 and my 05 that has the 5.4. The 2000 I could punch it and be gone the 05 I punch it a takes a second then your going.

Yah it was an older 4.6...I guess the delay is something we'll just have to live with!

I noticed this too, but driving my friends older 5.4 I can jump the gas a lot harder and sooner than his. I have a feeling that the 5.4 is more of a PIG motor (great for hauling but won't get up and go as quick) as a 4.6 This is info I have gotten from a couple of people.

Thats my impression of the 5.4 as well. good for towing, but the Titan with the same hp's is noticeably faster. The truck version of the 4.6 is nothing but a weak suck dog -- good for point a to point b transpo. and for carrying your wife's craftes back home from Hobby Lobby, but anything heavier taxes it, and forget a trailer heavier than 2k or so unless you want to downshift regularly and get 8-10 mpg.

2 dirt bikes (225 lbs each) in the back of my old 4.6 5 speed truck taxes it at freeway speeds and it has difficulty holding speed in cruise on even moderate grades

I went from a 1997 5.4 to a 2005 5.4 and I think the new motor is a turd. I wish I had my old truck when I go to get on it but love the new truck other than that. Wonder what Ford plans to do about the delay.

Get a tuner and it basically gets rid of the delay all together I havethe edge, and it made a world of diff in the throttle response.

Ur 4.6 was in chitty condition then... I pulled a 18ft trailer loaded with 4 wheelers/dirtbikes (at least 4 quads and 2 dirtbikes) and had no problem maintaining 80mpg, and got more than 10mpg.

Agreed...Streetstar your 4.6 definately has some problems. I have towed my mom's 2 horse trailer tons of times (4 hours w/ 2 horses...6 hours w/ 1 horse) and it never complained, not one bit. The 4 hours was when we changed barns but that is besides the point. I have never had a problem w/ my 4.6, I love it and I have overloaded my truck before all it gives me is more
