flywheel missing teeth?

any info. will help, 2000 F-150, 130K miles, 5.4 auto, 2 w/d, replaced the starter but every now and then same noise and wont engauge the flywheel, inspected and found a couple of teeth on flywheel broken off, starter gear looks good, no teeth damage on both starters, does this sound like a bad flywheel problem? will have the trans removed and replace the flywheel but not sure if this a commond problem, don't want to change out another one.

Give us a little info on the replacement starter. Is it a reman or new and where did you get it? Did it come with a shim kit?

I'd be replacing the flywheel. Not a common problem in my opinion but worth replacing.

Cool

HI!... 1st off you have a FLEXPLATE not a FLYWHEEL. An auto transmission uses a flexplate and a manual transmission uses a flywheel.

I also think its the flywheel. They tend not to be hard to change, just a bunch of work taking the tranny out, etc. I have not done a mod motor before, but have done dodge, chevy, ford, etc.

I bought one for my 86 and I spent about 80 bucks. I did a 3sp man to 3sp auto conversion and then found I had a bad flywheel.
