PI - NON PI Swap

2001 5.4L motor in a salvage vehicle (plastic manifold) , I can't have the motor , but the dude will swap heads and his plastic manifold for my aluminum non PI manifold and non PI heads.

The ketch - I have to do all the work of course, I've never did a swap like this tho .. He just wants the 2001 motor running smooth in the end , that's all he cares about..

Mann I was just workin on an 01 yesterday , I wish I would have know about this little deal earlier , I could have gotten a better idea of what it's going to take to do this .

I have a 98, I put my 98 heads and intake on the 01 motor . Will his comp be able to compensate? and what about the differences in the temp sensor , mann, can I get this to work ?..

I feel like I'm missing something or forgetting , I know I can istall his heads and intake on my 98 no prob , but putting Non PI crap on a motor that had a PI setup previously ?? I never heard of this being done lol

What problems am I going to have if I go ahead with it?

What I would be thinking about is the pistons/ compression. Will this change the compression to a point fuel/fire can't compensate properly. I hear that you have to run high octane when you put PIs on non PI block. Maybe as simple as different spark set up. Like you said we haven't heard of this before.

He bought the truck back from the insurance company - we all had a few pops last night - the more I think about it , the more I don't want to do it -

He wants it running write so he can sell it as an 2001 motor and he owes me $200 .

Good deal for me , but what if you were the one buying the 2001 motor and found out it had 98 non PI's on there. .. Someone's getting screwed.. I t sounded real good last night tho -

I don't blame you, it could also turn into an education in what not to do.

NON PI heads on PI motor

I will be doing more reaserch on these motors and buying some books. I have one Expedition, and will be buying another soon. I also will be building a 5.4engine for a future blower project. I also thought of putting the NON PI heads on a PI motor, to drop compression. The non pi has 9.0 to 1 and the newer PI has 9.8 to1, People claim a C/R of about 10.5 to 1 by using PI heads on a non PI. I'm thinking then a set of non PI heads on a PI motor should yeild about 8.5 to 1??? If these people are correct, then the early motors must have a high compression piston with an open chamber head, the newer PI must have a lower compression piston with a high compression head.???

Cool

HI!... Both non'P.I' and 'P.I' 5.4's have the same 9.0:1 compression. It's the combustion chamber that makes the difference. The P.I heads has a heart shaped closed combustion chamber, where as the non P.I heads a have a open combustion chamber.

NON 'P.I' = 52cc combuston chambers :

'P.I' = 44cc combustion chambers :

SOHC 4.6L, 5.4L,and 6.8L
1991 thru 1998 ------- 10.49cc dish
1999 thru 2003 ------- 18.10cc dish

Thankyou for the input Neal

Hi,
I was also surfing to find more info .I saw in an SA design book they quote a higher compression than 9.0 on the PI headed engines, I believe it was a static CR. Anyway I think I will end up getting the PI engine after reading what was stated in the book.
