Are you serious about that?? I have an oil filter cup and a stubby ratchet. Do you have bearclaws for hands?

I reach up from underneath. I don't remove anything to get to my filter. Your truck is newer though. Maybe they added more headaches for the shadetree mechanic.

Are you sure you're coming after it from the right angle?

With a "cap style" filter wrench I didn't think it was all that bad to get to for a modern vehicle....

Hello!!!

Just changed my oil yesterday (2006 KR; Castrol 5W20; Wiks filter from a local carquest). I used the old side grip filter wrench to loosen the filter (should have used the end cap style though). I placed a towel directly under the filter to catch the oil that drains from the filter when it becomes loose enough. BIG MISTAKE THOUGH!!! I didn't realize that directly beneath the filter is a molded plastic drain "chute" for the oil from the filter.

On my next change I'll use the correct filter wrench. Loosen the filter and let it drain into an open catch pan until the oil stops coming then reach up and remove the filter. Cleaner Change!!!

Also my position on the ground was lying on my back with my head towards the drivers side wheel. For me that's the best reach.

Regards,
EMoe

Well I don't know how everyone here approaches their oil filter but on these trucks they are really easy. Try doing one on the Chebbys ecotec engine, then come here and let me know what you think

No special tools or techniques need for the '04,Hand tightening and loosening is all that's needed here.

I go in with a strap wrench from above and it breaks loose with no problem.

The Motorcraft 5w30 is conventional oil, the Motorcraft 5w20 for the newer engines is a synthetic blend (5w20 5-quart jug for $10.36 at Walmart).

I believe it is best to use what ever you have been using before (conventional, synthetic, or blend) then switch to the higher-mileage stuff at 75 to 100k.

Brand is not as important as type (i.e. conventional is good, syn. blend is better, and full synthetic is best).
No matter what you use, just make sure it has the API seal for gasoline engines.

According to Motorcraft's website, they make the following Oils:
- SAE 5W-20 Premium Synthetic Blend Motor Oil
- SAE 5W-30 Super Premium Motor Oil
- SAE 5W-30 Full Synthetic Motor Oil
- SAE 15W-40 Super Duty Diesel Motor Oil
- SAE 10W-30 Super Duty Diesel Motor Oil
- SAE 10W-30 Super Duty Motor Oil
- SAE 10W-30 Premium Motor Oil
- SAE 10W-40 Premium Motor Oil

http://www.motorcraft.com/products.do?item=15

I think the 5w30 super premium is conventional and then they have the 5w30 full synthetic.
