98 F150 4x4 4.6L- What engine do I have?
The trans is an automatic. My engine finally went after 185,000 miles. It's actually a head, but since I can lift the cab off myself, I am going to replace the motor, rebuild trans and transfer case. Searching through auto dismantler search sites, they give a choice of three 4.6L engines, 1) the romeo (vin W), 2) Windsor (vin 6) 6 bolt flywheel, and 3) Windsor (vin 6) 8 bolt flywheel. My vin number does not have a 6 anywhere in it, but it does have a W in both the 8th and 10th position. Does that mean I have a romeo engine? And is there anything special I need to request, if I get a rebuilt motor and give them my old one as a core. I don't want to order an engine and then find out I need to replace flywheels or other items.

The W in the 8th position in the VIN indicates a Romeo engine. The most important thing to consider is the bolt pattern of the flexplate/flywheel. Romeo truck engines all have 6 bolt cranks. Most all Windsor truck engines have 8 bolt cranks. So when you pull the engine count the bolts holding the flexplate to the crank. And yes Windsor did build some Romeo style engines.
