A clogged filter or restricted fuel flow will usually cause problems when the engine is under a heavy load. Accellerating at highway speeds puts a heavy load on the engine. Lots of rpm in neutral or in a low gear does not load the engine as heavily as when you are accellerating in top gear.

So it sounds like a clogged filter is definitely a possibility.

They are cheap and very easy to change with the right fuel-filter tool, so it makes sense to replace it.

Here is a link:

And another, showing the filter line removal tool (same one I use)

Don't even try to get the lines off without the special tool (I got the Auto Zone set for like $10). It only takes seconds to remove with the right tool.

If the fuel system checks out ok, look at the trans.

Hmm, I had a problem like that with my old (the one in the sig) F150. Turns out a COP had gone bad but didn't throw a light for some reason. You may want to go get a diagnostic check done if the fuel system checks out. See if you have weak cylinder history or something, whichever cylinder that is. It's possibly the Coil on plug.
