Price of a new starter

I just had my starter replaced on my 2003 f150. It was covered under warranty and I only paid a $100 deductable to have it done. Could I have done it myself for any cheaper or did I save money by giving it to the dealer? My friends keep saying I got ripped off they could have done it for cheaper, but I don't have a garage and I don't feel like working out in the 16 degree weather on it.

You made out just fine. Advance Auto Parts wanted $115 for their cheapest starter plus a $26 core charge. Ford wants anywhere from $125 and up.

I bought a starter for $80, and it was put on for $20. My mechanic charged me an even $100 bill.

What were the Symptoms?

Deskinsd
What were the symptoms of your failed starter?
Other than the obvious, was your starter solenoid fuse blowing?
I think my starter in my 2004 has kicked the bucket. Battery is fine, but engine is dead and fuse 101 starter solenoid which is a 30amp fuse in my truck keeps blowing.

My starter just went click, when the starter went in my old truck it just sounded like it wasn't catching. This time it sounded like it caught but the starter was locked so it didn't want to go anywhere.

the connections in my starter rotted off.i just went ahead and replaced the whole starter, seeing as its a 97 and it looked like the original one. 80$ at autozone, about 1 hour of my time. that third bolt in the back is a pain.
