Bought a F-150, now what?
Hi there,
New to the board and F-150's. Just bought a 2001 Ford F150 with just over 100,000 miles on the 4.6L, upgraded my old ranger. It runs fine...but was just curious if there is any prevative maintenence on it or anything else I should do. I have no record of what has been done by the previous owner since I bought it from a dealer. I will say I am not getting very good mileage...not sure if it the winter blend or what but in city i am getting about 11-12. Thanks

its at 100k?? chances are the plugs are original. check your air filter, maybye chang the fuel filter. those are inexpensive things. pull a plug take a look. first thing i do any new vehicle is a oil change, check tranny fluid condition, coolant etc..hoses,belts. spend a good hour looking around,underneath. get familair with her.

I would pull the intake as well.. if I was having milage probs, I would clean the MAF, Pull the TB and elbow and clean them well - The 4six is known for plugging up the ports inside. Check for vac leaks and lean towards replacing the O2's . The 02's play a significant roll in MPG..
You should be getting a little better than that, 14-16 MPG is normal. If you did all what has been mentioned in this thread so far , I wouldn't be surprised if you got 16-18 mpg..
Theres after market accessories that can get you 20mpg if your looking to improve that much..

If you have no record of its prior service, you must assume nothing was done. You will need to flush the coolant, the transmission, service the differential(s), etc. Check the owner's manual. Everything listed between 0 and 100k miles needs to be done (well, not 30 oil changes, but you get the idea). I know that might seem an expensive way to go, but believe me, if something was not done, and you don't do it, the alternative is FAR MORE EXPENSIVE than anything you might spend getting it caught up now!!!!
You might call your local Ford dealer and have them run the vin. If you are lucky, the prior owner may have had it serviced at the dealer and you might be able to get records of it.

I got a K&N filter and plan on putting it in this weekend (as well as removing the silencer...thanks to this forum). Guess while I am at it I will clean the MAF sensor.
How big/difficult of a job is it to clean the TB and elbow? Not sure if I am going to be able to do that on my own.
And where are the O2 sensors located? Are they difficult to get to?
I'm going to call Ford tomorrow and have them run the VIN....thanks for the suggestion tritonpwr.

I wouldn't recommend removing the silencer - without going into to much detail - it's there for a reason..
Cleaning the TB and elbow isn't difficult , I don't use gaskets on anything from the manifold up because - they leak!! I tested with propane. I use RTV Permatex High Heat Black - The Black cures fast and not one leak..
You can also get a vehicle report on the internet - you can google it , to find the site.
I suggest you purchase a Chiltons/Haynes book at your local auto supply for the basics +.. They come in handy.

Hi everyone. I to am new to this site as well as to F-150 trucks (just bnought my first: 99 F-150, 69,000 miles, supercab, 4.6, auto, 4x2) Nov 20, 2006.
In the last two weeks I have added a 3/4 Belltech lowering kit w/ Nitro active shocks, 20x8.5 Dip wheels w/ 275/55-20 front and 295/50-20 rear Falken tires, K&N series 55 intake and a Hellwig rear anti swaybar.
When I first bought the truck it felt pretty weak down low but picked up in the mid to top range, it also had a service engine soon light (code for insufficient EGR detected) I changed all fluids, belts, hoses and filters did a complete tune up including Bosch Platinum plus 4 plugs, wires, pcv valve, replaced the EGR valve, vaccum regulator and DPFT switch but still after 25-30 miles light came back on, so yesterday I had one of my employee's pull the intake off and it was plugged completely!!!!
Cleaned everything replaced all vaccum lines, did complete fuel service and now she ruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuun's like a scalded dawg.
