i have a 02 supercrew and it sounds like any normal 97 to current starter its just loud, all of the starters are just as loud as mine that ive heard im just wounding if there is a way to quiet it down by putting a after market starter will tone it down, out of all the cars/trucks ive ever heard the ford trucks 97 and newer the starters are just loud

my dads toyota tundra sounds the same. a little bit quieter but not much. i dont think thats the starter your hearing. its just the engine firing and getting started.

Actually, the Ford starters are queiter than most. Aftermarket starters will not help and will probably make it worse. The pinion teeth tolerances will not be held as tight as the OEM product.

What the newer vehicles need is a smart start system that turns off the starter as soon as the engine starts. The 04's and up have it and not sure about the 97 - '03.

Quick add - I confirmed that the F250's do not have smart start

i like toyota's way of starting. you push the key forward and let it go. the starter still turns until the truck starts.

i guess none of you have heard a dodge dakota or chev silverodo start, the F-150 has the loudest starter on the market i changed the starter on my 66' f100 to a newer gear reducted starter and its so much quieter than the OEM, so i guess the next time you start your trucks listen to how loud it really is and compare it to others you may find its quite annoying besides that i am ford for life

ive owned 3 dakotas and whem those things started it was like a helicopter taking off. i think it was the roaring if the fan etc.. more than the starter

I know what you are saying 02sprcrw. I moved up from a 96 Ranger to an 02 f150 Supercrew 5.4L recently and I had the same question. My brother in-law has an 02 also and his sounds the same as mine. Niether one of us has had to change the starters so couldn't tell you if aftermarkek are quieter.

All OEM starters are gear reduced, has been for over 20 years. Crap, when I replaced my fishing line on my 1982 Zebco reel with OTC line, it was so much better!
