Bad Coil Pack? 1999 5.4L

The other day when I started my truck it was running like crapola and acted like it was not gonna get me anywhere. I went to the local AutoZone and they pulled code P0301 which says there is a "misfire" on cylinder #1. The next couple of days the truck drove fine. Yesterday the same problem - seems intermitant. I "had" my spark plugs changed about 120K and we are not about 136K so I do not think it's the plugs. I know there are are SEVERAL threads devoted to coil pack replacement but I have not read one relating to a 1999 5.4 specifically. Where is #1 located on this year model and any other help or steps would be GREATLY appreciated. Since the rooked my on the plug replacement for my own self esteem I want to replace this myself.

Thanks in advance !!!!

First of all you don't have coil pacs, you have COP's (coil on plugs) there different.

You lucked out - #1 is the easiest to replace - it's the first one on the passenger side - 10 minute job . Just remove the 7mm bolt and pull the coil off the plug in a twisting motion. Apply dielectric grease inside the boot and at the joints - bolt the new one in place. done.

I believe that #1 is the front passenger side cylinder. You are lucky that it is easy to get to. I started changing my plugs and this plug was full of oil. Just remove the bolt connected to the injector base and it should come right out. If you have a multimeter you can do some resistance checks on it.

You don't need to check it , you know it's bad . Besides resistant checks (primary-secondary) usually pass and they don't mean anything. Cop's don't fail here , they fail under a load and the only way to check is at the dealership on there computer in mode 6 that gives you cylinder history readings. Just do what I said and you'll be ok.

The internets the cheapest if you can wait for them - you can get all 8 COP's for $100 easy or just one for under $20 .

Jbrew,

Do you just wait for the SES light to come on to know if your COP is bad or is there a way to see if a COP is not doing its job very well?

#8 just went bad on me this week after my fuel supply line severed and it covered the COP with fuel .

What usually happens - (I have 200,000 miles so I've went thru this a few times) You'll start to misfire and won't realize it until it worstens and then you finally get a light when it goes totally out.

#8 was bad and I didn't have a light!!

What I did this time and other times in the past , I force a light. When it's misfireing I just give it hell , I'll step on it - floor it , work it hard until the light starts to flash . It's the only way to wake the computer up , unless you have access to a dealerships computer and look at graphed history to pinpoint the weak cylider. Your comp always stores history.

it may not be the COP. the rubber boot between the COP and the plug dry rot and crack, this allows it to short and misfire.

either way you need to remove it and the new COP's come with a new boot.

LOL - Kev's not a member - I know him because I purchased COP's for others from him . So have other people here. I got to know him because he sold COP kits and still does. The kits come with plugs , he always sends the wrong plugs. (bonehead) so I have to call him and specify the plugs every time . Still a good deal tho.
