HELP!! Trucks missing...no power... check engine light

ok.. new to this but need help quick!! Just traded our truck in for a 2000 Ford F150 last night. On the way home from the dealer, coming up a hill, when shifting into overdrive, it felt like the bottom jolted. Kind of shifted out rough on the rest of the way home.

Today, no problems with shifting out but it's missing TERRIBLY!!! This afternoon the check engine light came on and it has very very little power. It will idle fine will sitting still but as soon as you begin appling the gas, its starts spitting and sputtering.

BTW, the tach didn't work when we test drove it, it was actually on the 6 instead of the 1. Then half way home it jumped over to one and started working.. then today, back to 6 not working.. HELPPPPPPPP... (Of course, it's used so it was an as is deal and they tell me they are not responsible.. even though it wasnt 2 hrs from the time we left) any suggestions????????

One more thing, I got a list of things they did b/w taking it in as a trade and selling to us... says they replaced #8 coil and plug and preformed a 4 part fuel system service..

Obviously I don't know you but the questions arise are; why accept a truck that has obvious defects like the dash display?
Did you not get at least a 30 day warrenty?
Next you need to have the fault codes read and go from there to chase down the fault.
Sometimes a real steal is no deal in the end.
Good luck.

Does the lemon law apply to used cars?

You don't have to post the same thing repeatedly.

I suggest you remind them politely that they ARE responsible for making it work right, regardless of their "as-is" marketing. It still MUST work for the intended purpose, unless they sold it to you under a junk/salvage title.

If that doesn't work, cancel payment on the check & hire a lawyer.

Sorry for reviving a dead thread....but my 02 supercrew 4.6 is doing the same thing. I've replaced the fuel filter, air filter and all plugs and coils. I'm completely stuck at what else to look at. The truck drives like a four cylinder, it cruises just fine at light throttle but falls on its face when you try to get moving (especially up hills!). Anything else i should be looking at?

Take the top cover off so you can get in and check the wire harnesses for rubthru that may happen when the engine moves in it's mounts.
Are there any codes stored?
Is the crank position sensor plug on good?
Is the cam position sensor on good?

P0306
P0316
P0171

Those three codes showed up yesterday.

Do you have any tips on what to look for with the crank positioning sensor and cam sensor? I'm pretty proficient when it comes to basic maintenance but I'm not familiar the those sensors. Thanks for the help.

PO306 Cyl. No 6 Misfire Detected
PO171 System to Lean (Bank No. 1)
My Chilton manual doesn't list a PO316 code.

Looking from the top cylinder numbers are

4 8
3 7
2 6
1 5
FRONT

Sounds like a classic misfire. My 5.4 does this when a COP goes out or doesn't have a good connection. I would check that you have all the vaccum lines reconnected and that all your electrical connections to the cylinder 6 plug are good also.

Great info, thanks for the help guys. I just spent the last hour or so going through the froums using a search on those codes and found this to be a fairly common problem. I'll try moving the harness as well as inspecting the number 6 cylinder thoroughly.

Code 316 is a miss detected on startup.
It sure seems as if it is a physical movement problem of some sort.
The crank sensor is down at the front pully about 7 o'clock position.
Cam sensor at the drivers side head right on the front end face all by it'self.
