So what did the friend do to the vacuum line? I don't know about your particular model, but auto transmissions often depend on a connection to the vacuum to know when to shift. That way it knows or has an idea of the engine speed and load at the time...newer trucks probably depend on lots of other stuff as well...
You'll have to be more specific bout what the friend did, did he/she disconnect something, move a connection or swap it, replace the PCV valve or what?
Once we know that it ought to be fairly straightforward to know what to do, in the meantime it sounds like you're not able to change up properly, so avoid driving it as firstly, it could be dangerous, not having proper power or speed, and secondly, you might damage engine or trans by over-revving.

Well, your just going to have to take it back to the guy who found that hose that wasn't hooked up - tell that you would like it back the way it was.
