Question 5.4 Coil Packs Again

Hi,
I'm new to the forum. I've had to have dealer replace 2 coil packs since spring of this year, both times either rain or high humidity when they failed.
It rained Friday, truck started missing on Sat morning, 175 miles from home.
I'm guessing it is another coil pack. 2 questions. 1 how can I determine which coil pack has failed? 2. Did I harm something by driving the truck back before getting it fixed?
More, I'm not a great mechanic but I do a few things, if I can determine which coil pack failed can a guywho changes his own oil, starters, relays etc, change out the coil pack(s)?

I know the dealer is going to charge $100 for the diagnostic and then ~ 150 or more to change out the coil packs...sounds like a rip off to me. The truck is a 2000 that I bought new and only has ~ 75,ooo miles.
Thanks for the help in advance.

Look up "misfire" and pay special attention to the "dielectric grease" - This process get skipped ,therefore you can compromise your COP system(even new ones) the first time it rains.

Buy a code reader, and it will tell you which cylinder is misfiring. I got mine for $79 at Checker Auto Parts. It's an INNOVA 3100, and will also erase the set codes.

I've replaced 6 of the 8 COPS in the past 1 1/2 year. Two more to go, I keep a new one on the shelf.

Just for future refernce , you don't have "Coil Packs" on that 5.4, you have COP's - I did the same thing when I joined - there's a diff...

COP = Coil On/Over Plug...(No Wires)

Coil packs sprout wires..

BTW - A full COPs change out from the dealer is $987.62(have the estimate on the board lol) - been there , did it myself for $130 - New COP's & Plugs included in a kit.

Thumbs up Cops

Yep bought me 8 OEM COPS from ebay and got them in my garage in case one goes out. Dealer can cost you an arm and leg if you keep blowing one or two.

Buddy on another site wrote that his buds @ 4lakes4wheelers buys the V10 packs 4 there V8's so they always have a couple spares on tap - They carry a can of dielectric grease that has a trigger on it made by"CRC" (I think CRC, can't remember) with them, it works like those battery operated grease guns and comes out in a 1/4 inch bead form - These guys are some serious FudMuckers and know there chit!! - They know how important it is to keep the COP's dry and not to get in a situation leaving them otherwise, compromised lol - not to mention, a**hole deep in the mud..

That is only true if it generates a code to trigger the check engine light. I had a severe misfire and no CEL and my reader told me there were no codes. My Edge reported no codes either.

I too have misfires with no codes. I did get a blinking CEL when accelerating hard that once I decelerated went off. If you drive enough after, then the codes clear. I had my truck on a scanner today and nothing showed up. Apparently the 01 ford software is pretty brain dead. It takes a really severe misfire condition to get any information. The mechanic's advise (who also owns an 01 expedition like mine)was to replace all COPs, as he did on his at 60k (the mileage when they start to die).

Best,
jeff

The blinking CEL means an intermittant code that hasn't fully set. The scanner will tell you *MOST* of the time when the CEL comes on, but occasionaly its gives the "random multiple misfire" code which means keep trying until it stops running chitty

Yes, called him a couple days ago - people have been emailing me alot asking about "the kit" - 8 COP's, 8 Plugs for $130. He quit doing the kit deal - to many people complaining they got the wrong plugs, which they did . It was just a hassle for him from what I gather. Now , he emails me saying he will sell as kit if your looking for both, plugs & COP's - This is the kit -

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NEW-F...temZ8069960486

1 person has informed me that got a bad one (1 coil) and Kevin at Global wasn't returning his emails about the problem. That's the only negative thing I've heard so far and that's 1 out of at least 20 people that I know of that has purchased COP's from him. I bought three kit's and they were all good - The two trucks I installed them on are running great!

There clear on top - not painted like the ones you pay 50-70 bucks a piece for , but when you compare them to each one another they identical in shape - I believe they are OEM (as advertised) motorcrafts that Ford uses now to replace bad ones on older vehicles. I dunno -don't care , they worked for me and two friends trucks that I see often.
Before I found these on ebay the dealership quopted me $986 to change out my COPs for new ones (that was labor included - for them to do it totally)
