Looking at replacing the 2 heater hoses above #4 cylinder on a 98 F150 4.6. Would appreciate any info someone could give me on the best way to approach the R & R (special tools needed, cautions, etc..). Stay with the QD set up or use the hose/clamp set up without QD. Believe the current hoses to be the factory original ones. I've read about the quick disconnects & to replace with clamps vs. the QD set up. Thanks.

 

If they're not leaking, I would leave them alone. My truck had 185K miles on it when I pulled the engine (in fact, I haven't yet put the new engine back in yet) and they weren't leaking then. The only reason I might consider replacing mine is because the engine is out and I've got plenty of room to work. Like I said, if they're not leaking or giving you any trouble - put it off for another day.

 

Correct me if I am wrong but, I believe if you look real close you will see that one of the hoses runs under the intake manifold. Look in your Haynes or whatever manual and there will be a picture of the hose going to a metal pipe under the manifold.

Not such an easy job to replace.

 

Okay, the heater hose is now leaking & taken out the number 4 with a misfire. Not looking forward to replacing these. Any additional inputs on the best way to R & R would be appreciated. Napa & O'Reilly's carry the hoses & I will be picking up the parts soon. Thanks.

IT MAY BE YOUR INTAKE GASKET IS BROKEN IN THE REAR COOLANT PASSAGE! that's what happened to mine and it sure looked and seemed it was the heater hose

 

Thanks. Did you have to replace any additional parts, seals, etc.. when you pulled the intake? Any special tools needed? How long did it take to do the line repair? I may take a look under there to see how the line looks when I change the heater hoses.

Okay nope nothing special as far as tools, yeah , I wouldn't mess with the hard line behind the pump unless it is leaking - Thers 2 bolts that fasten the line to the back of the head..My fix on that line is in the books , but it never made the TSB's - it should have..Fords sent me the procedure , not the parts for free Damnit (that's what I was hoping for lol)..

If you mail them and blow a little sunshine up there a$$ about there product , they bend over backwards to help..

Anyway, when you order your intake gaskets make sure whoever orders them for you gets you the right one's - Fords moved the dowl holes around quit a bit on the heads and gaskets thru the years..

When tightening down the manifold , make sure you do it in sequence and only a little at a time for a good seal..

Check out the tops of your heads for pits around the water jackets - fill with aluminum filler if applicable..
