Firing order is 13726548

Base timing should be 10 D BTDC +/- 2 set with a timing light with the SPOUT plug removed.

Place #1 at TDC on its compression stroke (rotate engine and use a finger or thumb to plug the spark plug hole). This will get you in the ballpark without a timing mark.

While rotating engine in it's normal direction, observe the distributor rotor for direction of rotation.

Good luck.

Sounds like you tore into your engine and are putting it back together now.

Yep, we know all about those unexpected things ...

Thanks guys,
This whole mess started over a leaking intake gasket, caused by a broken stud on the front corner.Hopefully my only problem is that I've gotten the distributor off. Thanks again.

Ya we can tell you not a Ford man!
Cylinder count is from the front 1,2,3,4, on the passenger side and from the front 5,6,7,8 on the drivers side.
The fire order is 1,3,7,2,6,5,4,8 off the cap.
5L and 5.8L are the same.
